Newcastle United went out of the FA Cup in the fifth round after a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester City, with Eddie Howe admitting his team tired during the contest. Harvey Barnes put Newcastle United ahead, but Manchester City responded and controlled long spells at St James’ Park.
Jeremy Doku created Manchester City’s equaliser before half-time, setting up Savinho to score. In the second period, Omar Marmoush struck twice, completing the turnaround and extending a personal scoring run against Newcastle United that continues to cause problems for Howe and the squad.
Marmoush’s double means the forward has now scored seven goals against Howe’s Newcastle United. Those goals represent half of Marmoush’s overall tally since joining Manchester City in January 2025, underlining how often Newcastle United have struggled to contain the Egyptian attacker in recent meetings.
Howe felt Newcastle United began strongly but could not maintain their intensity once Manchester City settled. He praised the opening spell yet accepted that Pep Guardiola’s side gained control through long periods with the ball, especially after the break, when Newcastle United struggled to disrupt Manchester City’s rhythm.
“Good start from us, really good for half an hour,” he told TNT Sports. “There’s probably two things that happened. We couldn’t sustain our start in terms of energy but they also played really well. We just have to accept that. I felt we maybe ran out of gas, certainly in the second half but also towards the end of the first half. You have to say they were a very good side. We needed the ball to try and generate pressure but we couldn’t get enough of it.”
Following this latest loss, Newcastle United have now been beaten four times by Manchester City in all competitions during the same season for the first time. The sequence highlights the gap that still exists when Newcastle United face a Manchester City squad built for major domestic and European challenges.

Newcastle United now turn attention from the FA Cup exit to the Champions League, with Barcelona visiting St James’ Park next. Howe stressed how significant the home environment will be, given the physical effort required against Manchester City and the quick turnaround before facing Barcelona.
The crowd were magnificent today, Howe added. They didn’t have a lot to shout about after that initial period but they stayed with us and were cheering at the end. We will need them for the Champions League.
Howe’s comments again underlined Manchester City’s quality and Newcastle United’s need for energy on and off the pitch. The FA Cup exit, combined with four defeats against Manchester City this season, frames a demanding period as Newcastle United prepare for Barcelona in a crucial Champions League fixture.
