Aug. 21 (UPI) — Netflix on Friday released La captura, a Mexican film based on the operation that led to the 2016 arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, told from the perspective of the two federal police officers who found him as he attempted to escape.
The thriller, released internationally as Facing El Chapo, was directed by Chava Cartas and stars Alfonso Herrera and Noé Hernández, Netflix said.
Herrera and Hernández play Arturo Carmona and Héctor Rosales, two officers patrolling Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa when they intercept a vehicle reported stolen and discover that one of its occupants is Guzmán, then the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The film follows the officers in the hours after the arrest as they wait for reinforcements and face threats, bribery attempts and fears that members of the criminal organization might try to rescue the drug trafficker.
Herrera is known to U.S. audiences for his roles in the series Sense8, The Exorcist and Ozark. Héctor Kotsifakis plays Guzmán, while Juan Pablo Cruz García portrays Jorge Iván “El Cholo” Gastélum, one of Guzmán’s trusted associates.
The production is based on two accounts by Mexican journalist Héctor de Mauleón published by El Universal. The screenplay was written by Bernardo Esquinca, and part of the filming took place in Chihuahua, El Financiero reported.
“I thought it was a story worth telling,” Herrera told Excélsior.
Guzmán was arrested Jan. 8, 2016, after escaping through the drainage system during a Mexican Navy operation in Los Mochis. Police intercepted him and Gastélum as they traveled in a red Ford Focus reported stolen.
The arrest ended Guzmán’s second escape from a Mexican prison. Mexico extradited him to the United States a year later to face drug trafficking charges.
La captura had a limited theatrical run in some Mexican cinemas before joining Netflix’s international catalog Friday.
