Aug. 17 (UPI) — Robert De Niro is celebrating his 83rd birthday.

The award-winning actor has entertained audiences for nearly 60 years with his versatile roles, from troubled Vietnam War veteran Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver to mob hitman Frank Sheeran in The Irishman.

De Niro is a two-time Oscar winner and nine-time nominee who has also won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, an Honorary Palme d’Or and other honors.

Here’s a look back at 8 of his Oscar-nominated roles in honor of his birthday.

‘The Godfather Part II’

The 1974 film serves as both a sequel to The Godfather (1972) starring Al Pacino as mafia don Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), and a prequel telling the story of his father, Vito Corleone (De Niro), played by Marlon Brando in the original movie.

Considered by many to be one of the greatest sequels of all time, the film is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and the first sequel to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. De Niro’s portrayal of the elder Corleone earned him his first Oscar, for Best Supporting Actor.

Other cast members include Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, John Cazale and Talia Shire.

The Godfather Part II is available to stream on Hulu, Prime Video and Paramount+.

‘Taxi Driver’

De Niro reunited with his Mean Streets director Martin Scorsese on the 1976 film also starring Jodie Foster, Albert Brooks, Harvey Keitel, Leonard Harris, Peter Boyle and Cybill Shepherd.

The movie follows Travis Bickle (De Niro), a troubled Vietnam War veteran and nighttime taxi driver whose isolation and mental instability leads him down a violent path. De Niro’s performance earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Taxi Driver is available to stream on Prime Video.

De Niro and Scorsese would go on to collaborate on multiple other films beyond this list, including Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995) and The Irishman (2019).

‘The Deer Hunter’

The 1978 war drama directed and co-written by Michael Cimino casts De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage as Mike, Nick and Steven, three friends whose lives are forever changed by the Vietnam War.

John Cazale and Meryl Streep also star.

The Deer Hunter was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Actor for De Niro, and won five, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Walken.

The film is available to rent on streaming platforms.

‘Raging Bull’

De Niro won his second Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of real-life boxer Jake LaMotta, aka the Raging Bull, in the 1980 sports drama directed by Scorsese.

Also starring Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, the film is based on LaMotta’s 1970 memoir and depicts the boxer’s rise to fame and troubled personal life.

Raging Bull was nominated for seven other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Notably, the movie is largely filmed in black and white.

‘Awakenings’

The 1990 drama is based on Oliver Sacks’ 1973 memoir and directed by Penny Marshall (Big, A League of Their Own).

Late actor Robin Williams stars as Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a fictional neurologist based on Sacks who discovers a drug that can awaken patients left catatonic for decades by an encephalitis lethargica epidemic.

De Niro plays Leonard Lowe, a patient who receives the seemingly revolutionary treatment. His role as Leonard earned him his fourth Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Other cast members include John Heard, Julie Kavner and Penelope Ann Miller.

‘Cape Fear’

Also directed by Scorsese, the 1991 psychological thriller is a remake of the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, itself based on the John D. MacDonald novel The Executioners.

This movie casts De Niro as the villain: Max Cady, a convicted rapist who is released from prison and seeks revenge on Samuel Bowden (Nick Nolte), the public defender who represented him. Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis co-star as Samuel’s wife and daughter.

De Niro was nominated for his fifth Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the psychopathic Cady.

Cape Fear is available to stream on Prime Video and AMC+.

A series adaptation of MacDonald’s book starring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson was released on Apple TV in June.

‘Silver Linings Playbook’

The 2012 romantic comedy-drama is based on the Matthew Quick novel and directed by David O. Russell (American Hustle).

De Niro and Jacki Weaver play Pat and Dolores, the father and mother of Pat Jr. (Bradley Cooper), a man with bipolar disorder who moves in with his parents following his stay at a mental health facility. De Niro’s performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Other cast members include Brea Bee as Pat Jr.’s ex-wife and Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany, a new love interest, along with Anupam Kher, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, Shea Whigham and John Ortiz.

Silver Linings Playbook is available to stream on Hulu, Prime Video and Starz.

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

De Niro once again reunited with Scorsese on the 2023 film based on the David Grann book of the same name.

Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon centers on a real-life series of murders that took place after oil was discovered on tribal land belonging to the Osage Nation. The story explores the events through the love story of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), a White World War I veteran, and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), an Indigenous woman of the Osage tribe.

De Niro was nominated for his third Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of William King Hale, Ernest’s uncle and a corrupt local politician.
