June 26 (UPI) — A court filing by a National Park Service official said that a liner on the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool was “cut with a sharp knife or razor.”
The document was filed on Wednesday as part of a lawsuit to stop the renovation of the pool, brought by the Cultural Landscape Foundation, and continues President Donald Trump’s claims that vandals damaged the reflecting pool.
The declaration signed by Deputy Director for the National Park Service Frank Lands, said: “On June 9, 2026, after the rehabilitation project was substantially complete, the U.S. Park Police responded to an NPS report of damage to the reflecting pool, including a caulk over the foam sealant that was cut with a sharp knife or razor and destruction of delaminating surface material. In addition, approximately 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool.”
A Department of the Interior spokesperson told ABC News that the alleged “vandalism was under investigation and believed to be isolated.”
The spokesperson declined to provide photos.
“So as not to encourage deranged individuals, we did not announce what we hoped to be an isolated incident,” the spokesperson said. “It wasn’t until several days thereafter that there were recurring cases and videos of people ripping at the coating began to circulate. We then knew this was not an isolated incident, but a new trend to attempt to damage the Reflecting Pool.”
The department said there have been seven arrests, seven federal citations and 18 police reports filed.
The Park Police posted a video on X of someone allegedly damaging the reflecting pool, asking for help identifying them.
“The United States Park Police is seeking assistance in identifying the individual depicted here in connection with a Destruction of Government Property investigation. The incident occurred on June 19, 2026, at approximately 3:36 p.m. at the Reflecting Pool on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.,” the post said.
The White House and Department of Interior haven’t provided evidence of the widespread vandalism that the damage would require, and no details of the arrests have been released.
“The Reflecting Pool that you’ve heard so much about, which is so incredible, it’s been gruesomely vandalized by thugs, bad people, but soon will be looking as beautiful as it looked just two weeks ago,” Trump said Wednesday night.
“In fact, I looked at it just a little while ago, it looks perfect already,” the president continued. “But we’re fixing it. The vandals got to it, they’ve largely been caught and are being prosecuted. We can’t let that happen to our country.”
The Park Service “plans to begin draining the reflecting pool following the Independence Day celebration to conduct repairs, including assessing and repairing any damage to the lining.” Lands said in the document.
