Sept. 23 (UPI) — The Indianapolis Colts will place wide receiver Alec Pierce on injured reserve, coach Shane Steichen told reporters Wednesday.

Steichen said he did “not have a timetable” for Pierce’s return. Pierce aggravated a previous left heel injury in the first quarter of a 33-30 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. He was carted off the field and did not return.

Pierce totaled four catches for 61 yards in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He caught an 11-yard pass in Week 2. He led the Colts with 1,003 yards off 47 catches last season. Pierce found the end zone six times in 2025.

He signed a four-year, $114 million extension in March. Pierce underwent surgery on the same heel that month and was limited in practice and against the Ravens. Steichen did not say if Pierce would undergo another surgery.

“Injuries happen,” Steichen said. “You never want to see it happen, but we would have never put him on the field if we didn’t feel good about it and he didn’t feel good about it.”

Laquon Treadwell, Ashton Dulin, Deion Burks and Darius Slayton, who signed earlier this week, are among the Colts’ backup wide receivers, behind Pierce and fellow starters Josh Downs and Keenan Allen.

Downs led the Colts with nine catches for 109 yards through two weeks. Tight end Tyler Warren, who scored twice during that span, was the only Colts pass catcher to find the end zone.

The Colts also placed defensive end Michael Clemons on injured reserve earlier this week due to a toe injury.

They will host the Houston Texans at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday in Indianapolis.
