Sept. 21 (UPI) — Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman provided an update on injuries to his face Monday after being hit by a foul ball by teammate Michael Busch.

Bregman posted a selfie on Instagram on Monday from Chicago. The three-time All-Star was struck in the top of the fourth inning of a 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in Cincinnati. He was treated at a local hospital before traveling back to Chicago.

“Thanks for all the messages, y’all,” Bregman wrote on an initial Instagram story Sunday night. “I’ll be back.”

Bregman’s first update showed wet blood on his left cheek and the early stages of a black eye on the same side. His second update showed some scraping and deep black around his eye.

The veteran infielder was near the on-deck circle during the scary sequence. Busch worked a 1-2 count against Reds relief pitcher Luis Mey with two outs in the half inning.

Mey checked his swing on the fifth pitch of the exchange, a 97-mph fastball. He sent the pitch into the dirt and flying into foul territory toward the Cubs dugout and into Bregman’s face.

Mey bent over after being struck. A trainer tended to Bregman, who was taken into the clubhouse and to a local hospital.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Bregman experienced swelling and also bled from his nose after the sequence.

“It’s a terrible, terrible accident,” Counsell said. “We hope he’s OK.”

Bregman, who was replaced by Matt Shaw, went 1 for 1 with an RBI and a walk at Great American Ball Park. The 11-year veteran, who joined the Cubs in free agency in January, hit .262, with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs over 153 games this season.

The Cubs (87-69), who have baseball’s best offense (MLB-best 835 runs), lead the National League wild card race. They will host the Miami Marlins (76-80) at 7:40 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Chicago.
