Aug. 1 (UPI) — At least nine people are dead and many more injured in Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky posted on X: “Eighteen residential buildings, a school, the Lithuanian Embassy and infrastructure facilities were damaged.”

“Overnight, the Russians launched 35 missiles at Ukraine, including 27 ballistic missiles, as well as 185 attack drones of various types,” he said. “Kyiv was the primary target, but strikes also hit the Dnipro, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions.”

Ukraine, using drones, also sank a Russian-owned container ship in the Black Sea Saturday. Russia said that all crew members were rescued.

“Middle strikes were carried out overnight, with successful hits in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov,” Zelensky said on X. “A sanctioned Russian container ship, Yanina, sailing under the Russian flag and with a capacity of more than 100,000 tons, was also struck. Thanks to the precision of our Defense Forces, it was sent to the bottom.”

Rosatom, the Russian Atomic Energy Corporation, owns the ship. It had been transporting civilian goods including frozen food and construction materials, adding that the attack took place 130 miles from Novorossiysk.

“Such an attack cannot be interpreted as anything other than piracy and robbery,” the BBC reported Rosatom’s CEO Alexey Likhachev said, adding that all 17 crew members were in a “satisfactory” condition.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the capital was attacked by a barrage of ballistic missiles on Saturday. Fires broke out around the city, and many were without power.

A residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed, and people were trapped inside, Klitschko said.

Emergency services said at least seven people were killed and 14 injured in a strike in the Darnytskyi district. In the Solomyanskyi district, two people died and eight were injured, including two children. A five-story residential building was partially destroyed, officials said.

A missile landed near the Lithuanian embassy, breaking windows and scattering debris in the compound, Lithuania’s foreign ministry said.

The foreign ministry said on X that it will summon the Russian representative in Vilnius and will seek compensation for the damage.

The ballistic-missile attacks from Russia have escalated recently, prompting Zelensky in a meeting with President Donald Trump to ask for help, particularly wanting access to the Patriot interceptor missiles.

Trump later said he was unsure if he would allow Ukraine to license the system.

“We have not agreed to that. We’re talking about it, but it’s a hard thing to give away that kind of technology,” Trump said about the possibility. “People that you give that technology [to], they can some day turn on you. You know that is possible.”

Russia attacked Kyiv on Thursday, killing at least eight people, including six members of one family. One Russian cruise missile landed in Poland during the attack, the BBC reported.
