July 10 (UPI) — Animal rescuers in Scotland came to the assistance of a male fox cub seen wandering for at least two days with its head stuck inside a plastic bottle.
The Scottish SPCA said an animal rescue team was dispatched to a Glasgow neighborhood on June 27 after a neighbor reported the fox’s predicament.
The fox fled into its den when rescuers tried to approach it, so they returned for a second attempt the following day.
“After an extended search and several unsuccessful attempts to catch the cub, rescuers feared they had lost him when he disappeared. Moments later, he emerged from the undergrowth with the bottle still trapped around his head,” the SPCA said.
The bottle was removed and the fox was taken to the University of Glasgow’s Small Animal Hospital to be treated for a neck wound from the bottle.
The fox is now being cared for at the SPCA’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre until it is healthy enough to be released.
“This fox was incredibly fortunate. Had we not managed to catch him, the injuries caused by the bottle could have become life-threatening,” an animal rescue officer said. “Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident. Every year, we see wild animals injured, trapped or killed by discarded litter. Something as simple as taking your rubbish home or disposing of it properly can prevent animals suffering in this way.”
