July 16 (UPI) — A man allegedly breached the Today show set Thursday in New York, lunged at anchor Craig Melvin and shouted a racial slur.
The “disorderly person” managed to slip past security at 30 Rockefeller Center. He was arrested about 9 a.m., the New York Police Department said.
The man hasn’t been identified. He was able to access a restricted area in the studio while allegedly looking for Al Roker. He then set his sights on Melvin, 47.
Today show hosts didn’t address the incident on air.
A law enforcement official told CNN the man is expected to face burglary and other charges.
Police are trying to determine how the man got past security, and they’re watching surveillance footage. They’re also reviewing the body camera footage worn by the arresting officers, the official said.
Some NBC employees told CNN they were shocked because of the amount of security in the building. One person said they have to swipe or show their work badge multiple times to enter the building.
NBC increased security measures in February after the mother of host Savannah Guthrie was kidnapped.
