Aug. 6 (UPI) — Ohio Republican Sen. John Husted on Thursday called for Rep. Max Miller to resign and abandon his reelection campaign amid allegations of domestic violence.
“Anyone who commits domestic violence is not fit to serve in Congress,” Husted said in a post on X, adding that the House Ethics Committee should “thoroughly investigate any credible allegations.”
Husted’s remarks came two days after Miller, also a Republican, said he would ask the committee to investigate the allegations to clear his name “from these horrific attacks on myself and family.”
Emily Moreno, Miller’s ex-wife, has said that Miller physically harmed her and their 2-year-old daughter. He has denied the accusations.
Miller’s former father-in-law, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, has said Miller should not be serving in the House of Representatives, joining calls for him to resign.
Miller and Emily Moreno have been in a custody battle over their daughter since their divorce last year. Moreno, a conservative policy advisor, has said that Miller scalded her with hot water and hit and threatened her during their marriage.
“I know both Max Miller and Emily Moreno, as well as their families,” Husted said on Thursday. “I am deeply saddened that their personal lives have become such a public matter, especially as it relates to their daughter.”
Miller is up for re-election in November and said he will not drop his campaign. Politico reported that it is unlikely the Ethics Committee would make any report on Miller before the election.
The deadline for Republicans to replace Miller on the ballot in November is Monday.
