Aug. 23 (UPI) — Actress Shelley Fabares, a prolific television actress whose credits include “Coach” and “One Day at A Time,” died Saturday at 82 after a brief illness, her family said.

Fabares, who was a series regular on “The Donna Reed Show” between 1958 and 1963, also had two Top 40 hits including “Johnny Angel.” She starred in three movies with Elvis Presley in the 1960s.

She later played the wife of dying Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in the TV movie, “Brian’s Song” in 1971.

She was nominated twice for the Emmy for her role on “Coach,” where she played the TV newscaster and love interest of fictional football coach Hayden Fox, played by Craig T. Nelson.

“Clearly, Christine is a very successful woman and firmly entrenched in her career and loves her work. And she loves this man,” she told the Washington Post in 1990. “It’s a difficult problem in life to find your balance. We’re all going through the same things. I have a wonderful relationship with my husband, but I’m still a career woman.”

Her first marriage was to second marriage was to record producer Lou Adler. She married “M*A*S*H actor Mike Farrell in 1984.

Fabares is survived by Farrell and two stepchildren.
