July 23 (UPI) — Patrick Kane agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, the team announced Thursday.

The veteran winger, who initially joined the NHL franchise as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. He totaled 57 points, from 41 assists and 16 goals, over 67 appearances in 2025-26.

Kane, 37, ranks second among active NHL players in career assists, trailing only Sidney Crosby. His 1,400 career points trail only Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.

“Day in and day out for 16 seasons, Patrick captivated the city of Chicago with his dazzling skill, creating some of the most memorable moments in Blackhawks history as he helped bring our storied franchise back to the pinnacle of our sport,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a news release.

“He’s shown on countless occasions that he knows what it takes to win at the highest levels, and we couldn’t be prouder for Patrick to once again call the United Center home and continue to shine in Chicago’s brightest lights.”

Kane left the Blackhawks in a 2023 trade to the New York Rangers. He played on one-year contracts each of the last three seasons while with the Red Wings.

The nine-time All-Star ranks second in Blackhawks history with 1,225 points and 779 assists, trailing only Stan Mikita. His 446 goals and 1,161 games played are third in franchise history.

Kane won Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He received Conn Smythe honors — as Stanley Cup playoffs MVP — in 2013. He tied Tyler Johnson for the NHL lead with 23 points during the Blackhawks’ 2014-15 postseason run.

He recorded at least 47 points in each of his 19 seasons. Ovechkin is the only other active NHL player to record at least 40 points over each of the last 19 years. He recorded at least 42 points in each of his 21 seasons with the Washington Capitals.

Kane is the last active NHL player among those who won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks. He is set to join a rejuvenated squad, led by 2023 top-overall pick Connor Bedard, who registered a Blackhawks-best 75 points last season.

The Blackhawks will open their preseason slate against the Minnesota Wild on Sept. 19 in Saint Paul, Minn. They will take on the Vegas Golden Knights in their regular-season opener Sept. 29 in Las Vegas and host the St. Louis Blues in their home opener Oct. 6 in Chicago.
