Aug. 10 (UPI) — At least 13 people were killed and 39 injured overnight after a “massive” raid by Ukrainian drones on Nizhnekamsk in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, 600 miles east of Moscow, that Russia’s foreign ministry said would not have been possible without backing from the west.

The strikes involving many hundreds of drones targeted industrial and civilian targets, according to Tattarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov, who said he had declared a period of mourning across the region.

A child was among those killed, Russia’s Investigative Committee told TASS.

Russia carried out attacks of its own against eastern regions of Ukraine, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens.

“Nizhnekamsk came under a massive Ukrainian drone attack. There are fatalities. A decision has already been made to declare mourning across the region for those killed as a result of the war crime committed by the Ukrainian armed forces,” said Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik, adding that five others had been killed in attacks on other Russian regions and every death was on the Western sponsors who supplied arms to Ukraine.

“More than 30 civilians were affected in Belgorod and more than 50 in Nizhnekamsk, including at least 18 killed. It is important for Western sponsors of the Kyiv regime to realize and remember that every life cut short and every civilian fate destroyed lies on the conscience of those who put weapons in the hands of Nazi killers and allowed them to believe that they would escape retribution for their crimes,” Miroshnik said.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine said the attack on Nizhnekamsk was targeting the city’s Tanevo oil refinery, which was reportedly hit with long-range FP-1 strike drones made by Ukrainian defense contractor Fire Point.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the attacks were part of a wider airborne offensive targeting 16 Russian regions, plus annexed-Crimea, but that air defenses had downed 456 of the Ukrainian drones.

Five people were killed early Monday in Ukraine’s Kharkiv province in “massive artillery shelling” by Russian forces of residences in Bugaivka village close to the front-line in Chuhuyiv district, southeast of Kharkiv.

“As a result of the enemy attack, houses were destroyed. Five people died,” the Chuhuyiv district prosecutor’s office of Kharkiv region said in an update on Telegram, adding that it had opened a pre-trial probe investigating the attack as a war crime.

At least four others were killed and 50 injured in Russian attacks in Kharkiv city and Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Donetsk provinces.
