July 29 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Fausto weakened Tuesday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center, which warned the Hawaiian Islands to expect “significant surf” over the next couple of days.

The storm was located about 255 miles north-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and 310 miles east-northeast of Honolulu. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph, the NHC said in its 5 p.m. HST update.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

However, the NHC said surf generated by Fausto would build westward across Hawaii along east-facing shores through Tuesday as the storm approached and began to pass north of the islands.

“On the forecast track, Fausto should pass north of the Hawaiian Islands tonight through late Wednesday,” it said.
