Sept. 22 (UPI) — East of Eden, Carrie and The Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping are being adapted for film and television this fall.
New adaptations will open in theaters and debut on streaming services in September, October and November.
Some big-name stars are attached to movies and TV series based on books. Here’s a rundown.
‘The Love Hypothesis’
The 2021 romance novel by Ali Hazelwood originated as a fan fiction work about “Reylo,” a ship between the Star Wars characters Rey and Kylo Ren.
The published book follows the romance between Olive, a Stanford University graduate student, and Adam, a professor, who pretend to date but start to develop real feelings.
Prime Video is adapting Hazelwood’s novel as a new film starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) as Olive and Tom Bateman (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Adam. Other cast members include Rachel Marsh as Olive’s best friend Ahn and Nicholas Duvernay as her crush Jeremy.
The Love Hypothesis premieres Sept. 23 on Prime Video.
‘East of Eden’
John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel is an epic chronicling the interwoven saga of the Trask and Hamilton families. The story begins with Adam and Charles Trask, two brothers whose family is forever changed by Adam’s beautiful but sociopathic wife, Cathy Ames.
Netflix is adapting the book as a new show starring Florence Pugh (Midsommar) as Cathy, Christopher Abbott as Adam, Mike Faist as Charles, Joseph Zada as Cal and Joe Anders as Aron.
The series is created, co-written and showrun by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel.
East of Eden starts streaming Oct. 1 on Netflix.
‘Verity’
It Ends with Us author Colleen Hoover wrote the 2018 psychological thriller Verity, which follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired to complete a popular book series after its author, Verity Crawford, is left comatose after an accident.
Amazon MGM Studios is adapting Hoover’s novel as a new film starring Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as Lowen, Anne Hathaway as Verity and Josh Hartnett as Verity’s husband, Jeremy.
“After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession,” an official synopsis reads.
Verity opens in theaters Oct. 2.
‘The Price You Pay’
The 2018 thriller novel was published by Nick Harkaway under the penname Aidan Truhen. The book follows Jack Price, a cocaine dealer who becomes the target of an international terrorist organization.
AMC is adapting The Price You Pay as the new series Kill Jackie, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as a reimagined version of the character. Daniel Ings, Bill Paterson and Ron Perlman also have roles.
Kill Jackie premieres Oct. 2 on AMC+.
‘Carrie’
Horror icon Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel tells the story of Carrie White, a sheltered and bullied high school girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers.
Netflix is adapting Carrie as a new series from The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan that reimagines King’s book in today’s age of social media.
Cast members include Summer H. Howell as Carrie, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Gayle.
Carrie starts streaming Oct. 7 on Prime Video. King’s novel was previously adapted as a 1977 film starring Sissy Spacek.
‘Incidents Around the House’
The 2024 horror novel by Josh Malerman is narrated by Bela, an 8-year-old girl whose family is pursued by a supernatural entity that she calls “Other Mommy.”
Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and James Wan’s Atomic Monster are adapting the book as a new film starring Arabella Clark as Bela, Jessica Chastain as Bela’s mother Ursula and Jay Duplass as Bela’s father Russ.
The movie brings viewers on “a terrifying trip into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationships with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother,” an official synopsis reads.
Other Mommy releases in theaters Oct. 9.
‘Sense and Sensibility’
The 1811 classic is the debut novel of famed Pride and Prejudice author Jane Austen. The story centers on Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, two sisters who experience life and love in late 18th century England.
The romantic drama is being adapted as a new film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and Esme Creed-Miles as Marianne. Other cast members include Caitriona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum and Colonel Brandon and George MacKay as Edward Ferrars.
Sense and Sensibility opens in theaters Oct. 16.
Austen’s novel was previously adapted as a 1995 film directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as Elinor and Marianne, respectively.
Netflix is also adapting Pride and Prejudice as a new series starring Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden, Olivia Colman and Rufus Sewell.
‘Whalefall’
The 2023 survival thriller novel by Daniel Kraus imagines the story of Jay Gardiner, a young man who is swallowed by a sperm whale while diving in search of his father’s remains.
20th Century Studios is bringing the book to life as a new film starring Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Resident Evil) as Jay and Josh Brolin as his father, Mitt Gardiner.
“While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape,” an official synopsis reads.
Whalefall releases in theaters Oct. 16.
‘Wildwood’
The 2011 fantasy adventure novel by Colin Meloy follows Prue McKeel, a seventh-grade girl who discovers a magical forest near her hometown of Portland, Ore., after her baby brother Mac is kidnapped by crows.
Laika, the Oregon-based animation studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, is adapting the popular YA novel as a new, stop-motion animated film featuring the voices of Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan and Mahershala Ali.
Other voice cast members include Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jermaine Clement and Maya Erskine.
Wildwood opens in theaters Oct. 23.
‘Klara and the Sun’
The 2021 sci-fi novel by Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go) is narrated by Klara, an android known as an AF, or “artificial friend,” who is purchased as a companion for Josie, a 14-year-old girl with grave health issues.
Sony Pictures is adapting the book as a new film starring Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) as Klara, Mia Tharia as Josie and Amy Adams as Josie’s mother Chrissie. Aran Murphy, Natasha Lyonne and Steve Buscemi also have roles.
The movie is directed and co-written by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit).
Klara and the Sun releases in theaters Oct. 23.
‘Victorian Psycho’
The 2025 horror novel from Virginia Feito tells the story of Winifred Notty, a 19th-century British woman who becomes a governess as part of her revenge scheme.
The book is being adapted as a new film written by Feito and starring Maika Monroe (It Follows, Long Legs) as Winifred. Thomasin McKenzie, Ruth Wilson and Jason Isaacs also star.
Victorian Psycho had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and opens in theaters Nov. 13.
‘Sunrise on the Reaping’
The 2025 dystopian survival novel by Suzanne Collins is the second prequel to her Hunger Games book series. The book takes place about 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and 24 years before the events of the first Hunger Games novel.
Sunrise on the Reaping centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy, who competes as a tribute for District 12 in the 50th annual Hunger Games, a battle royale competition where young people fight to the death.
Lionsgate is adapting the book as The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, a new film starring Joseph Zada as a 16-year-old Haymitch. Woody Harrelson played an adult version of the character in the Hunger Games film series.
Other cast members include Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping releases in theaters Nov. 20.
