Wolves eased some pressure in the Premier League by beating Aston Villa 2-0, a result that also ends any threat of matching Derby County’s unwanted points record. Second-half strikes from Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes defeated the third-placed visitors and lifted the division’s bottom side to 13 points.
The win at Molineux also damaged Villa’s Champions League ambitions, with Unai Emery’s team missing a chance to strengthen their top-four position. Rodrigo Gomes struck in the 98th minute, moments after Yerson Mosquera produced a crucial goal-line clearance to stop Amadou Onana from levelling the match.
The result carries extra meaning for Wolves because Derby County’s record low Premier League total of 11 points from the 2007-08 season can no longer be matched. Wolves now move to 13 points, finally removing a statistic that had followed the squad through a difficult campaign.
That pressure had built over a long poor run at Molineux. Between May and December 2025, Wolves went 11 home league games without victory, collecting only two points with a record of D2 L9. Recent form shows improvement, with four unbeaten games from their last six, taking eight points.
When asked how it felt to get a West Midlands derby victory, Edwards told BBC Match of the Day: “Elation, relief! I know how big a game this is for us and our supporters. It’s a Midlands derby, and we take pride in it. When the final goal went in, it was the final nail in the coffin, and I could enjoy the final 20 seconds. Villa are such a good team with loads of individual talent and quality, so you have to do your job. In transitional moments, we needed to be clean, go for it or stay behind. In defence, there was a great desire to keep the ball out of the net.”
Edwards also addressed the long-running comparisons with Derby County’s 11-point season, which Southampton almost matched last year. Asked about that low total, Edwards said: “It’s been hanging over our heads. It’s not something I’ve focused on. To do it in this game, with everyone watching, was important; it keeps us moving in the right direction.”
Wolves Premier League match stats and key moments
Wolves made the most of their limited attacking chances, scoring from both efforts on target. Villa applied late pressure after falling behind, yet Mosquera’s intervention and Rodrigo Gomes’ stoppage-time finish settled a tense derby, underlining the home side’s renewed resilience in decisive moments.

The defeat left Emery heading straight for the tunnel at full time, and Edwards revealed there had been no conversation between the coaches. Edwards explained: “Not yet, I get it. The two games we won, both managers had disappeared, he said. They probably think they can turn up and win, given how the season has gone! I’ve got a lot of respect for Unai, I think he’s brilliant, so it’s fine.”
Goalkeeper Jose Sa highlighted the players’ effort and the importance of the derby success. Sa told Sky Sports: “I think it was very good from every player. The fans deserve it too, Jose Sa told Sky Sports. I know it’s very important to them because it’s a derby. We give them this win. We have a lot of character. We will keep fighting and take it game by game.”
The result gives Wolves renewed hope in the Premier League survival fight and offers a rare high point after a difficult home run. For Villa, the setback dents Champions League hopes, while for Wolves it marks progress away from Derby County’s record and rewards a more stubborn recent run of form.
