Wolfsburg gained a narrow advantage in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final, beating Lyon 1-0 in the first leg. Lineth Beerensteyn struck in the 14th minute, with a shot from the edge of the box that deflected off Damaris Egurrola and deceived goalkeeper Christiane Endler. The result gave Wolfsburg a valuable lead and stretched the club’s unbeaten run in this season’s competition to three matches.
Lyon carried much of the attacking threat across the 90 minutes, yet left without a goal. The French side produced 19 attempts, generated 1.9 expected goals, and hit the frame of the goal. However, only three efforts troubled the target. Wolfsburg attempted seven shots, defended with discipline for long spells, and restricted Lyon to half-chances for much of the second half.
The match also ended an impressive away sequence for Lyon in the Women’s Champions League. This defeat was Lyon’s first away loss in the competition since a 2-1 reverse at Juventus in March 2022. That result had started an 18-match unbeaten streak on the road, which Wolfsburg halted with this first-leg victory, giving the German club a psychological boost before the return meeting.

Beerensteyn highlighted how Wolfsburg stayed united when Lyon increased the tempo and pressure after half-time. “The difference was that we were really strong collectively,” she said. “We fought for every metre, for every goal, and in the end we won 1-0. I’m so proud of this team; it was an amazing performance. If we show the same spirit as we did [at home], we can make it very difficult [in the second leg].”
Head coach Stephan Lerch underlined how Wolfsburg balanced bravery in possession with defensive commitment against Lyon. “The plan was to play with courage, especially in possession, and to keep the ball. In the second half, we had to suffer a little, but we defended with heart and with everything we had. I’m very proud of the team. It’s a great result for the first leg.”
Lyon head coach Jonatan Giraldez pointed to missed chances and loose transitions as key factors in the first leg. “We created more chances than our opponents, but I think, in terms of our level, we didn’t have a perfect game,” he said. “We conceded three or four transition situations where Wolfsburg were able to create chances. We’re used to having more control to avoid this type of situation. We came back into the game, we started to defend better, to attack better, to find spaces to create opportunities, but today it was not enough.”
Wolfsburg Lyon Women’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg outlook
The second leg now offers contrasting tasks for both clubs in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final. Wolfsburg travel with a single-goal cushion, confidence in defensive shape, and belief in collective work. Lyon must recover from the end of a long away streak, sharpen finishing, and regain control in transition, knowing even small details could decide who reaches the semi-finals.
