Bayern Munich earned a 2-1 first-leg lead over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, yet the tie stayed open after Kylian Mbappe struck late. Luis Diaz and Harry Kane scored either side of half-time, but Bayern wasted several clear chances and needed repeated interventions from Manuel Neuer during a fast, open Champions League quarter-final.
The match highlighted familiar Champions League storylines for both attacks. Kane returned from injury and found the net again against Real Madrid, while Mbappe’s latest goal extended an already prolific European season. Both stars shaped the narrative, yet several teammates also produced key moments at each end of the pitch.
Bayern started strongly and almost led when Kane slipped a pass to Dayot Upamecano inside the six-yard box. Upamecano mishit the shot, and Alvaro Carreras hacked the ball off the line to rescue Real Madrid. That escape fueled a response from the hosts, who soon tested Neuer through Vinicius Junior and Mbappe.
Thiago Pitarch then played a loose pass in Bayern territory, but Madrid failed to punish the error. Bayern capitalised soon after. In the 41st minute, a flowing counter ended with Diaz steering a first-time finish around Andrii Lunin. The goal rewarded Bayern’s early pressure and gave the visitors a narrow half-time advantage.
Any Madrid plan to restart calmly collapsed almost instantly. Only 20 seconds after the interval, Michael Olise found Kane unmarked near the edge of the box. Kane took a touch and placed a precise shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving Lunin unsighted and putting Bayern 2-0 ahead inside the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid then increased the tempo and created enough openings to stay alive. Vinicius rounded Neuer but missed the target from a tight angle. Neuer later produced a standout save, stretching to tip a driven attempt from Mbappe around the post. Bayern, though dangerous on the break, increasingly leaned on Neuer’s positioning.
Madrid pressure finally told when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a measured cross into the area. Mbappe met the ball and shot towards goal, and Neuer got a hand to the effort but could not prevent it crossing the line. That strike reduced Bayern’s lead and gave Los Blancos hope ahead of the second leg.

The underlying numbers underlined how open the contest was in the Spanish capital. Real Madrid generated 1.97 expected goals, compared with Bayern’s 2.99, and both sides recorded 20 shots. Kane scored with one of three attempts, while Olise led Bayern with four shots and four completed dribbles, often driving transitions from the right.
4 – Harry Kane has scored or assisted in four consecutive #UCL appearances against Real Madrid (2 goals, 2 assists), the joint-longest run by a player against them in the competition (also 4 by Giovane lber in 2002 and P-E Aubameyang in 2017). Kane’s goal means the forward has now scored or assisted in four straight Champions League matches against Real Madrid, matching runs by Giovane Elber in 2002 and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2017. Mbappe’s strike took the forward to 14 Champions League goals this season, a tally bettered only by Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema in single campaigns.
Ronaldo has passed 14 goals in a season three times, while Lewandowski hit 15 during the 2019-20 edition and Benzema reached 15 in 2021-22. With Bayern holding a slender advantage and both Kane and Mbappe in strong scoring form, the second leg promises another open contest with little margin for error.
