The much-anticipated Kolkata Derby in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season has been rescheduled. The clash between East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, originally set for May 3, 2026, at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata, will now take place on May 17.
The decision was taken due to security concerns linked to the West Bengal Assembly elections. Polling is scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026, with vote counting and results expected on May 4. Authorities anticipate heightened political activity, potential tensions, and large-scale deployments in the days immediately following the results.
Senior police officials informed organisers that providing adequate security for a high-voltage fixture like the Kolkata Derby, just one day before the election verdict, would be challenging. Massive crowds, passionate rivalries between the two clubs, and the need for extensive crowd management make the match a major security operation. With law enforcement resources stretched thin around the sensitive post-poll period, hosting the game on May 3 was deemed unfeasible.
Kolkata Derby rescheduled to May 17
The rescheduling aims to ensure the safety of players, officials, spectators, and stadium staff while maintaining the integrity of the fiercely contested ISL campaign. The May 17 date is confirmed as the match will start at the same time at 7:30 PM at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
This is not the first time the Kolkata Derby has faced disruptions due to external factors. The intense rivalry between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, two of Indian football’s most storied clubs, consistently draws packed houses and national attention.
The ISL 2025-26 season, which began on February 14, 2026, is heading towards its business end. The derby remains one of the most crucial fixtures, often influencing title contention, playoff spots, and local bragging rights. For East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, the match may also play a crucial role in their respective playoff and championship aspirations.
