Inter strengthened control of the Serie A title race with a 2-0 home victory over Genoa, yet Cristian Chivu insisted the Scudetto remains undecided, warning that 11 league games and 33 points still lie ahead for a team also chasing Coppa Italia success after a painful Champions League exit.
The win extended Inter’s cushion over AC Milan to 10 points at the top after matchday 27, with Federico Dimarco striking first at San Siro before Hakan Calhanoglu converted to seal the result, giving Chivu’s side an eighth straight Serie A success and underlining Inter’s response to recent European disappointment.
Across 27 Serie A fixtures, Inter have gathered 67 points, a total the club previously reached only in 2006-07 and 2023-24, when they posted 73 and 72 points respectively at this stage and went on to secure the Scudetto on both occasions, while their current 22 league wins are the highest tally in Europe’s top five competitions.
The current sequence of eight consecutive league victories is Inter’s best since the period from January to March 2024, when Chivu’s team produced a 10-match winning streak in Serie A, further highlighting the consistency which has pushed the Nerazzurri clear at the summit despite a congested domestic and European schedule.
| Season | Matches played | Points after 27 games | Scudetto outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2006-07 | 27 | 73 | Won |
| 2023-24 | 27 | 72 | Won |
| 2025-26 | 27 | 67 | Ongoing season |
Despite the statistical strength, Chivu urged Inter to avoid any sense of comfort, explaining the dressing room mindset remains guarded. “We prepare for every match in the best way, mentally and physically, treating every game the same way without looking at the name of our opponents,” Chivu told Sky Sport Italia. “That is what we have been trying to do since the start of the season. There are 11 rounds to go, 33 points up for grabs, so the Scudetto is not won yet. We want to build on all the good things we’ve done in the last two and a half months.”
That stance reflects recent setbacks away from Serie A, as Inter’s defeat of Genoa followed a damaging Champions League play-off tie against Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt, who claimed a 3-1 victory in Milan before completing the aggregate success with a 2-1 win in the return leg, leaving Chivu’s squad under pressure to deliver domestically.
There is still the chance of two trophies, as Inter prepare for a two-legged Coppa Italia semi-final against Como, travelling for the first leg on Tuesday to face Cesc Fabregas’ team, before turning attention to a high-stakes Derby della Madonnina with AC Milan the following weekend, which could further shape the Serie A standings.
Chivu stressed that the squad’s internal culture remains strong across competitions. “All 24 players work hard and have a winning mentality, they never grumble, and they always accept the reality of the situation, whether it’s in Serie A, the Coppa Italia or Champions League,” Chivu said. “We want to be competitive, we’ve had ups and downs, but we have ambition and are in good shape.”
The combination of a sizeable Serie A advantage, historic points pace and upcoming domestic tests leaves Inter well placed yet still cautious, with Chivu emphasising performance levels, unity and attitude as the group looks to convert numerical superiority into another Scudetto while also targeting a deep Coppa Italia run after the setback against Bodo/Glimt.
