Graham Potter agrees a four-year deal to remain Sweden head coach, staying in charge through the 2030 World Cup cycle regardless of qualification. The Swedish football federation confirms the long-term contract after an initial short-term spell for Potter.
The extended agreement comes before a crucial World Cup play-off. Sweden face Ukraine on March 26, with the winners meeting either Poland or Albania for a finals place. Those fixtures will decide whether Sweden reach the next World Cup tournament.
Potter moved into the Sweden job in October, one month after being dismissed by West Ham in September. The coach initially signed a short-term contract, tasked with stabilising a struggling Sweden side during the ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign.
When Potter arrived, Sweden had lost three of four World Cup qualifiers. The first match under Potter ended in a 4-1 defeat against Switzerland, then a 1-1 draw with Slovenia closed the group. Sweden finished bottom of Group B but kept a play-off chance through their 2024-25 Nations League ranking.
| Match | Opponent | Result | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| First game under Graham Potter | Switzerland | 4-1 loss | World Cup qualifier |
| Group finale | Slovenia | 1-1 draw | World Cup qualifier |
| Upcoming play-off | Ukraine | To be played | World Cup play-off |
| Potential final play-off | Poland or Albania | To be decided | World Cup play-off |
“It’s a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward,” said the former Brighton and Chelsea boss. “I’ve had a good first time as Swedish national team coach and have enjoyed myself very much. Sweden is a football country with a proud history, with teams that have made it to [major tournaments],which we want to return to.”
Potter’s comments underline long-term aims beyond the immediate World Cup play-off pressure. The coach now has security through the 2030 World Cup cycle, while Sweden seek to turn Nations League progress and strong football traditions into consistent qualification for major international tournaments.
