Liam Rosenior has ruled Enzo Fernandez out of Chelsea’s next two fixtures, against Port Vale and Manchester City, after recent comments about the midfielder’s future. The decision follows Fernandez’s interview during the international break, and Chelsea view the move as a disciplinary sanction rather than a permanent separation.
During the national-team window, Fernandez told ESPN that he did not know if Chelsea would keep Fernandez next season and hinted at possible interest from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old Argentina international joined Chelsea for 105m in January 2023 and will now sit out the FA Cup quarter-final plus the Premier League meeting with Manchester City.
“It’s disappointing for Enzo to speak that way, Rosenior said. I have got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. As a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He’s frustrated because he wants us to be successful. In terms of the decision, it’s not all about me, or the sporting directors. The ownership, the players, we are aligned in our decision. The door is not closed on Enzo. It’s a sanction. You have to protect the culture, and in terms of that, a line was crossed.”
Rosenior stressed that Chelsea’s leadership group, including ownership, coaching staff and squad, agreed on this response to Fernandez’s remarks. Chelsea then confirmed publicly that Enzo Fernandez would not feature against Port Vale and Manchester City, with Rosenior highlighting that the club’s internal culture required a firm line after the interview comments.

Chelsea’s record against lower league opposition in domestic cups remains strong despite Fernandez’s absence. Since 2015-16, Chelsea have faced 37 such opponents in domestic cup ties and progressed every time. In FA Cup ties against non-Premier League teams, Chelsea have advanced from 64 of the last 66 matches.

The current FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale is the first meeting between the clubs since April 1929. That game, a league fixture, finished 1-0 to Port Vale. Across 14 historical meetings, all in the second tier between 1905-06 and 1928-29, Chelsea recorded seven wins, four draws and three defeats.
Chelsea and Enzo Fernandez alongside Marc Cucurella situation
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella also discussed future options, stating that a return to Barcelona could appeal one day, while adding that Cucurella remained content in London for now. Unlike Fernandez, Cucurella received no sanction, as Chelsea viewed the interview tone and context as different from Fernandez’s comments.
“The players were motivated that we could do something really special in the Champions League, Rosenior said. The comments from Enzo and Marc Cucurella’s interview both stem from that. It actually stems from a good place where they want the club to succeed. But in those moments, we need more emotional stability as a group of players.”
Rosenior’s approach places emphasis on discipline while keeping Fernandez’s long-term role open, as Chelsea prepare to face Port Vale in the FA Cup and then Manchester City in the Premier League. The club’s strong record against lower league teams, combined with the public stance on dressing-room culture, shapes a controlled response to recent player statements.
