Kevin De Bruyne is preparing for Napoli’s crucial Serie A meeting with AC Milan while openly admitting some doubts about football’s place in life and about where the final chapter of a long career will be played, despite feeling physically ready to compete at elite level.
The former Manchester City midfielder recently returned to Napoli’s starting XI in Serie A for the first time since October, after a thigh injury kept De Bruyne out for much of the campaign, and two full matches for Belgium against World Cup co-hosts the United States and Mexico have further sharpened form before Monday’s clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli enter the meeting sitting third in Serie A, one point behind second-placed Milan, with both teams regarded as outsiders in the title race because Inter hold a six-point cushion at the top and, according to the Opta supercomputer, have an 89.1% probability of securing the Scudetto this season.
Despite that position, Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri keeps attention on qualification aims rather than title talk, with the coach stressing that Champions League football must remain the priority while Inter control their own destiny in the race for first place.
De Bruyne has produced four goals and two assists in 14 appearances for Napoli since arriving on a free transfer last year after a decade filled with trophies at Manchester City, but the 34-year-old now treats football more as employment than pure enjoyment, even if the competitive edge continues to drive daily work on the pitch.
Asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport if Napoli would be his final club, De Bruyne said: “I don’t know that, I don’t think about it now. I think I can still play for a few years, then when the body tells me to stop, I will do it. But for now, I feel good. I wanted to continue playing at a high level, and at Napoli there was the possibility of doing so. It was the best choice for everyone. I don’t think I still love football as much as I did in the beginning. But I imagine it’s normal after 30 years. Sometimes it happens that you lose a bit of interest, like in any job, I suppose. I also don’t know what I’m going to do after my career. First I want to enjoy my family, because they have made a lot of sacrifices.”
Napoli vs Milan Serie A outlook and Allegri’s view
Allegri underlined that Milan must secure a top-four position before speaking about titles, warning how quickly months of good work can unravel late in the season, and also pointed out the difference between maintaining ambition and actually turning ambition into trophies while Inter remain in control of the Scudetto race.
“When we are mathematically sure of being in the top four, then we can think about something else,” Allegri told reporters in his pre-match press conference. “Football is fantastic, but in 15 days you can see seven months of work turned on its head. We mustn’t say that we want to win, because it doesn’t achieve anything. When you work at a club like Milan or Napoli, you must have ambition, but having ambition and actually winning are two different things. So, we must continue looking over our shoulders, especially as getting back into the Champions League is in our hands, just as the Scudetto is in Inter’s hands.”
Napoli vs Milan Serie A players to watch
Among midfielders in Serie A this season, only Nico Paz with 10 points and Danilo Cataldi with nine have earned more points for their teams through combined goals and assists than Napoli’s Scott McTominay, who has delivered eight points from seven goals and three assists, with Milan’s Adrien Rabiot also sitting on eight points.
McTominay stands on 49 goal involvements across Europe’s top five leagues and needs one more to reach 50, while another league goal would make McTominay only the second midfielder in the three-points-for-a-win era to score 20 times in the first two Serie A seasons, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan registered 22 for Roma during 2019-20 and 2020-21.
Napoli vs Milan Serie A milestone for Maignan
Milan captain Mike Maignan is set for a landmark outing, with the next Serie A appearance bringing up 150 matches in the competition, and the goalkeeper has posted standout shot-stopping numbers during this campaign based on Opta’s expected goals on target model.
Maignan has conceded 23 goals, excluding own goals, from 32.7 expected goals on target, meaning Maignan has prevented 9.7 goals, a figure bettered this season across the top five European leagues only by Angers goalkeeper Herve Koffi, who leads the metric at 10.3 goals prevented.
Napoli vs Milan Serie A history and match prediction
Across the last five Serie A seasons, starting from 2021-22, meetings between Napoli and Milan have been completely balanced, with four wins for each side and one draw, a sharp contrast to the previous 10 seasons when Napoli lost only two of 20 league games against the Rossoneri, claiming 10 victories and drawing eight.
This fixture arrives with the Opta model leaning slightly towards the home side, and the overall prediction pointing to a very tight contest where a draw remains a strong possibility despite Napoli’s recent winning sequence under Antonio Conte.
MATCH PREDICTION
DRAW
This match also creates Serie A history because it marks the first time Napoli and Milan have faced each other at least 30 games into a league season while separated by a single point or less in the table, with previous smallest gaps after that stage being two points in May 1936 and July 2020, when Napoli stayed unbeaten with one victory and one draw.
Napoli vs Milan Serie A form and Opta probabilities
Napoli come into the contest on a run of four straight Serie A wins and can record five consecutive victories in the competition for the first time this season, something last achieved by an Antonio Conte team in a seven-game sequence between December 2024 and January 2025 during Napoli’s Scudetto-winning campaign, although Milan’s organisation could disrupt that push.
Opta’s win probability model assesses the likely outcome as closely contested but marginally in Napoli’s favour, with the remaining percentage reflecting a significant chance that both sides may cancel each other out in a stalemate after 90 minutes.
| Team | Opta win probability |
|---|---|
| Napoli | 38.3% |
| AC Milan | 32% |
| Draw | 29.7% |
With De Bruyne back starting for Napoli, McTominay chasing milestones, Maignan nearing 150 Serie A appearances and the teams split by a single point, the meeting at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona carries major implications for the top-four race while leaving Inter as clear favourites in the title battle.
