Jack Rudoni struck a stoppage-time winner as Coventry City defeated Stoke City 2-1, sending Frank Lampard’s team eight points clear at the top of the Championship after a packed day of league action that also shaped the automatic promotion chase, play-off positions and the relegation battle.
Coventry went ahead after 12 minutes when Haji Wright met a cross with a precise header past Tommy Simkin, and although Coventry created many further chances, Stoke equalised deep into first-half stoppage time through Ben Gibson, before Rudoni punished a poor late clearance from Simkin to seal a fourth consecutive league victory.
Millwall increased the pressure on Middlesbrough in the Championship promotion race, winning 2-0 against Preston North End to move within one point of second place, as Ryan Leonard struck shortly before the half-hour and substitute Luke Cundle added a second goal in the 92nd minute to secure the result.
Ipswich stayed close behind in the Championship standings, two points off Millwall in fourth, after a 3-0 home victory over Swansea City, responding after Hull City had temporarily overtaken them earlier in the day when Matt Crooks earned Hull a 1-0 win against Portsmouth, before Anis Mehmeti, Ivan Azon and George Hirst restored Ipswich’s advantage.
Southampton and Derby County also strengthened their Championship play-off prospects, with Southampton beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 and Derby overcoming Blackburn Rovers 3-1, while Middlesbrough now face extra pressure before playing on Monday as Millwall’s victory narrows the gap in the race for the second automatic promotion place.
At the bottom of the Championship table, Oxford United recorded an important 2-1 home success against fellow relegation contenders West Brom at the Kassam Stadium, cutting the gap to safety, and to West Brom, to three points, with Will Lankshear scoring the decisive goal that keeps Oxford’s survival hopes alive.
