Manchester United Women exited the Women’s Champions League after Bayern Munich turned the quarter-final around late. Bayern won 2-1 on the night at the Allianz Arena and progressed 5-3 on aggregate, overturning United’s early lead and reaching the last four.
United had revived the tie after 11 minutes when Melvine Malard punished a defensive error. Malard intercepted a mix-up at the back, moved into space and finished calmly, levelling the aggregate score and putting pressure on Bayern in front of the home crowd.
Bayern responded with sustained pressure and finally broke through from two corners in four minutes. Glodis Viggosdottir diverted in Carolin Simon’s inswinging delivery from the right to equalise, before Linda Dallmann smashed home from another corner in the 84th minute to settle the tie.
The numbers showed Bayern’s control across the Women’s Champions League second leg. Bayern attempted 16 shots, with 12 efforts from inside the penalty area, while generating 2.36 expected goals. United finished with 0.73 expected goals and were forced to defend deep for long spells.
| Team | Shots | Shots in box | Expected goals (xG) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bayern Munich | 16 | 12 | 2.36 |
| Manchester United | – | – | 0.73 |
Bayern’s threat from set-plays had been clear earlier when Phallon Tullis-Joyce almost mishandled a dead ball. That pattern continued as Bayern’s corner routines finally broke United’s resilience, sending Bayern to the Women’s Champions League semi-finals for the third time.
United’s exit meant the club did not match Manchester City’s record. City remain the only side to reach the competition’s semi-finals in their debut campaign. United have now conceded 12 goals in the Women’s Champions League, with 10 of those coming against German opposition.
The defeat leaves Manchester United Women with lessons from their first deep Women’s Champions League run. Bayern Munich advance with momentum after exploiting set-pieces and sustained pressure, while United reflect on a tie that slipped away in the final 20 minutes.
