Atalanta BC begins its UEFA Champions League knockout campaign at home in Bergamo on Tuesday against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Round of 16. While Bayern secured direct qualification to this stage, Atalanta had to navigate a tense playoff tie against Borussia Dortmund, eventually progressing thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Lazar Samardžić.
Atalanta remains Italy’s only team left in the competition this season. However, their recent domestic form has been somewhat inconsistent. The Bergamo side have taken just one point from their last two league matches and also played out a 2-2 draw with S.S. Lazio in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final. Over the weekend, they required a late brace from Gianluca Scamacca to rescue a draw against Udinese.
Standing in their way is a Bayern Munich side enjoying an outstanding campaign. The Bavarian giants have won the vast majority of their matches this season and have already defeated European heavyweights such as Paris Saint‑Germain F.C. and Chelsea F.C. on their path to the knockout rounds. Under the guidance of Vincent Kompany, Bayern are also pushing for silverware on multiple fronts, having reached the semi-finals of the DFB‑Pokal.
Bayern warmed up for the clash with a commanding 4-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, even in the absence of star striker Harry Kane. With both teams aiming to take control of the tie early, the encounter in Bergamo is set to be a demanding challenge for the Italian side.
Atalanta vs Bayern Munich Team News And Injury Update
Atalanta
Raffaele Palladino will be hoping for a timely boost ahead of the first leg at home, with midfielder Ederson pushing to be fit for Tuesday’s clash. Captain Marten de Roon is set to return to the starting XI after being rested during the recent league game against Udinese Calcio.
However, Atalanta will still be missing several influential players. Defender Giorgio Scalvini is suspended for the tie after seeing a red card in the last game, while Giacomo Raspadori has only recently returned to training and may not yet be match-ready. Creative midfielder Charles De Ketelaere remains sidelined with a knee injury. His absence will be a big miss for the Italian side. Ketelaere has been involved in six goals and created 20 chances during the group stage, averaging around 0.9 more open-play goals per game when he starts.
In attack, the striker position remains a tactical decision between Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstović. Scamacca strengthened his case with a brace at the weekend and has also scored in each of his last three home appearances in the Champions League, highlighting his strong scoring trend at the Gewiss Stadium.
Bayern Munich
Manuel Neuer will miss the upcoming clash after picking up a calf injury during a recent Bundesliga match. The issue is expected to sideline the veteran goalkeeper for several weeks, ruling him out of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Atalanta BC. In his absence, Jonas Urbig is likely to take charge between the posts.
Bayern will also be without Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito, both of whom remain sidelined through injury. Meanwhile, teenage defender Cassino Kiala has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.
There had been minor concerns surrounding Harry Kane after he missed a recent league fixture with a small knock. However, the problem is not believed to be serious, and Bayern’s medical staff are confident the striker will be close to full fitness for the trip to Bergamo.

Atalanta vs Bayern Munich Prediction
Bayern Munich will enter the tournament as clear favourites after coming second on the UCL table post the end of the group stages. For the Italian side, it was a hard-fought win against Borussia Dortmund after they failed to secure a direct qualification to the Round of 16.
Domestically, Atalanta have also struggled, currently finding it difficult to maintain consistency in Serie A as they battle to stay in the race for European qualification spots. Atalanta, however, looked threatening against Borussia in Bergamo and will look to take inspiration from that performance against Bayern.
Atalanta vs Bayern Score Prediction: 2-4 win for Bayern
