Arsenal carry a 3-1 lead into the Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Chelsea after Alessia Russo settled a dramatic first meeting at the Emirates, with the visitors denied by two disallowed goals and the hosts surviving heavy pressure from the Women’s Super League leaders.
The reigning champions created the clearer chances overall, yet the contest swung through several big turning points, including a late Kadeisha Buchanan effort ruled out, a long-range finish from Lauren James, and a disallowed Veerle Buurnam header, leaving Chelsea facing a difficult task in the return game.
One of the game’s most debated moments came just before half-time, when Veerle Buurnam climbed above Laia Codina to head in from close range, only for the defender to then go to ground under limited contact, and the officials eventually cancelled the goal, frustrating Chelsea after a strong spell.
Deep into stoppage time, Chelsea believed they had found a late lifeline as Kadeisha Buchanan forced the ball over the line from a scramble, but the referee spotted a foul on goalkeeper Anneke Borbe, so the effort did not stand and Arsenal protected a two-goal cushion for the second leg.
Chelsea began the tie with high intensity, repeatedly attacking down Arsenal’s right flank, and within eight minutes both Alyssa Thompson and Lauren James struck the inside of the far post after slack defending from the hosts, yet neither effort dropped over the line and Arsenal somehow stayed level.
Despite Chelsea dominating that early spell, Arsenal struck first in the 22nd minute when a Katie McCabe free-kick from the left was glanced on by Stina Blackstenius, whose faint touch diverted the ball beyond a stranded Hannah Hampton and gave the home side a lead that shifted the match pattern.
Arsenal then added a second goal 10 minutes later, as Beth Mead laid the ball into the path of Chloe Kelly outside the area, and Kelly curled a precise low shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving Hampton with little chance and putting the Emirates crowd in full voice at 2-0.
After the interval, Chelsea pushed again and were rewarded in the 66th minute when Arsenal failed to clear a corner, allowing the ball to drop for Lauren James, who produced an excellent looping effort from distance that sailed over a crowded box and beat Anneke Borbe to cut the deficit.
Russo restored Arsenal’s two-goal advantage 10 minutes later, collecting possession on the left edge of the box and drilling a driven strike into the bottom-left corner, a finish that not only sealed the 3-1 scoreline on the night but also continued Russo’s prolific European campaign.
Chelsea had already struggled against Arsenal this season in the Women’s Super League, drawing one game and losing the other, and this defeat means Chelsea go three meetings without victory against the same opponent in a single campaign for the first time since facing Manchester City in 2018-19.
Data showed Chelsea created plenty during this Women’s Champions League contest, finishing with 14 shots to Arsenal’s 12 and a marginally higher expected goals figure of 1.47 compared to 1.43, while both teams registered six efforts on target, underlining how fine the margins were despite the scoreline.
Russo’s goal carried extra significance beyond the tie, as the Arsenal forward now has eight goals in this season’s Champions League, which sets a clear record for the most goals scored by an English player in a single edition of the competition and gives Arsenal strong momentum before the second leg.
