Arsenal strengthened their Premier League title hopes with a narrow 1-0 win at Brighton, moving seven points clear after Manchester City failed to beat Nottingham Forest. Bukayo Saka provided the decisive moment, scoring on Saka’s 300th Arsenal appearance in all competitions with an early strike.
The goal came when Saka cut inside and shot, with the effort deflecting off Carlos Baleba and wrong-footing Bart Verbruggen, who reacted late as the ball crept in. Earlier, Baleba almost punished Arsenal when a high lob drifted over David Raya, but Gabriel Magalhaes tracked back to clear near the line.
At 24 years and 180 days, Saka became the fourth-youngest Arsenal player to reach 300 appearances, following David O’Leary, Cesc Fabregas and Liam Brady. Saka continued a strong record against Brighton, with five direct goal contributions in six Premier League matches at the Amex Stadium, scoring three times and providing two assists.
Those three goals at Brighton match Saka’s best return at any away Premier League ground, alongside three strikes against West Ham at the London Stadium. The winger’s influence again proved decisive, as Arsenal converted limited chances while protecting a valuable advantage in the title race against close rivals.
Goalkeeper Raya also reached a landmark, registering a 100th Premier League appearance for Arsenal. Across those games, Raya has collected 43 clean sheets, the highest total recorded by an Arsenal goalkeeper in a first century of league matches and level with Edwin van der Sar’s 43 for Manchester United.
Brighton created enough to threaten a draw and actually edged the expected goals numbers, generating 0.80 xG compared with Arsenal’s 0.43. Georginio Rutter went close with a powerful drive that Raya just touched away with outstretched fingertips, while sustained home pressure forced Arsenal to defend deep for long spells.
Former Brighton forward Leandro Trossard passed up a huge chance to extend the lead late on, slicing a finish wide from Jurrien Timber’s low cross. Despite that miss, Arsenal’s compact shape and Raya’s handling protected the slim margin as Brighton failed to convert pressure into a goal before the final whistle.
