Arsenal’s FA Cup hopes ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Brighton in the quarter-finals, days after reaching the Women’s Champions League semi-finals. Goals from Madison Haley and Caitlin Hayes secured progress for Dario Vidosic’s team, while Renee Slegers asked Arsenal to accept responsibility for a display that fell short at Meadow Park.
The result means Arsenal remain without an FA Cup trophy since 2016, despite strong league and European campaigns. With key Women’s Super League fixtures and a Champions League semi-final ahead, Slegers stressed that the group must recover fast, analyse the setback, and channel frustration into the rest of the season.
Brighton struck first soon after half-time. In the 48th minute, Madison Haley ran onto Fran Kirby’s precise throughball and drove a fierce finish into the top-left corner. The goal shifted the tie, forcing Arsenal to chase the game and commit more players forward against organised Brighton defending.
Slegers reacted with a triple change on 58 minutes, introducing Olivia Smith, Caitlin Foord and Alessia Russo to lift Arsenal’s tempo. However, Brighton doubled the lead five minutes later. Kirby delivered a corner from the left and Caitlin Hayes rose highest, looping a powerful header over Daphne van Domselaar into the net.
Underlying numbers reflected a tight FA Cup contest between Arsenal and Brighton. Arsenal produced 17 attempts, with three on target, for an expected goals figure of 1.56. Brighton managed 10 shots and an xG of 1.3, yet converted twice, underlining the difference in finishing and decision-making in key penalty-area moments.
Slegers underlined that Brighton’s efficiency in both boxes decided the FA Cup quarter-final, while Arsenal lacked a sharp edge. Slegers said: “I think we have to put our hands up and own the performance and congratulate Brighton because they managed the game better than us. They were clinical with the finishes they had, and we didn’t create enough, though there were enough chances to win the game today.”
The quarter-final loss arrives just before the final international break of the campaign, giving Arsenal a pause before league and Champions League commitments resume. Captain Kim Little highlighted that the squad must process the defeat, but also identify progress within recent performances to return stronger after national-team duties.
Little explained how Arsenal plan to handle the FA Cup disappointment. Little said: “You obviously don’t want to sit with it for too long, we’re professionals, so we know how to respond to situations like this. We’ll obviously be disappointed in our performance, and we’ll reflect, assess our individual and team performance, and what we did today, what didn’t go right. Then we’ll obviously look to put that right, coming back after the break.”
Elsewhere in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Liverpool reached the last four with a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic after extra time. The decisive moment came in the 116th minute when Zara Shaw forced the ball past goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse, finally rewarding Liverpool’s sustained pressure at the end of a tense tie.
Charlton had defended deep for long spells and almost forced penalties, especially during extra time. Jenna Clark struck the woodwork twice in the second half of extra time, keeping Liverpool anxious. The statistics highlighted Liverpool’s dominance, with 26 shots and an xG of 4.11 against Charlton’s six attempts and xG of 0.62.
| FA Cup quarter-final | Team | Score | Shots | xG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arsenal vs Brighton | Arsenal | 0 | 17 | 1.56 |
| Arsenal vs Brighton | Brighton | 2 | 10 | 1.30 |
| Liverpool vs Charlton Athletic | Liverpool | 1 | 26 | 4.11 |
| Liverpool vs Charlton Athletic | Charlton Athletic | 0 | 6 | 0.62 |
The FA Cup quarter-final results leave Brighton and Liverpool preparing for semi-final fixtures, while Arsenal and Charlton refocus on league priorities. For Arsenal, the immediate task lies in using analysis from Meadow Park to support their Women’s Super League push and their Women’s Champions League semi-final challenge later in April.
