Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola stressed that the team must avoid any slip in the Premier League title race, with Nottingham Forest visiting on Wednesday and Arsenal five points clear at the top, although City still hold a game in hand after a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds United in their previous league fixture.
Recent form keeps City in contention, with 11 wins from their last 16 Premier League matches, four draws and one defeat giving them 37 points in that run, more than any other club since matchday 13, yet Guardiola viewed the gap to Arsenal as a serious threat rather than a small margin.
Modelling gives City only a 15.9% chance of catching Arsenal in the Premier League title race, while Mikel Arteta’s side are rated at 84% to secure a first league championship since the 2003-04 campaign, so every remaining fixture for City carries heavy pressure, including the Forest meeting.
Arsenal kept control of the Premier League title race with a composed win against Chelsea on Sunday, when William Saliba and Jurrien Timber scored either side of the interval, both from corners, underlining how important set-pieces have become at the top of the table this season.
The Gunners now sit on 16 Premier League goals from corners this season, the joint-highest tally by a team in a single campaign, matching Oldham Athletic in 1992-93, West Brom in 2016-17 and Arsenal’s own record from 2023-24, a sign of how finely prepared routines can decide tight matches.
Across the division, corners are having a greater impact, with 138 goals from corners in 281 Premier League games this season, already above the 135 corner goals recorded in 380 matches last season, suggesting that clubs at every level are investing more time and analysis in dead-ball situations.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot argued that this growth in set-pieces has made the competition less enjoyable to watch, and Guardiola partly agreed with that view while also stating that clubs have little choice but to adapt to that tactical reality if they want to compete at the very top.
To illustrate the changing landscape, Guardiola referred to trends in basketball, comparing the rise of corner routines to the increased use of the three-point shot in the NBA over the past four years, where many teams now rely heavily on that option as part of standard strategy rather than a rare weapon.
City’s own concern, however, stayed firmly on the Premier League title race and the risk of any mistake in the next two league matches before the international break, with Guardiola repeating that Arsenal’s advantage means City must approach every game with a knockout mindset, especially against a side fighting relegation.
Forest arrive at Etihad Stadium in a difficult position, sitting 17th after losing 15 of 28 Premier League games this season, and their record away to City is poor, with three defeats from three top-flight visits since promotion in 2022-23, no goals scored and 11 conceded in those matches.
Forest also have a long winless run away to City in league play, stretching back eight visits since a 3-0 success in November 1989, with three draws and five defeats during that period, but Guardiola pointed to the threat they carry under Vitor Pereira and warned against complacency among City players.
City’s current sequence gives reason for optimism, yet Guardiola emphasised that Forest still have quality in attack and a large squad, naming Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi as examples, while also highlighting that opponents fighting to avoid relegation often compete with great intensity during this stage of the season.
I remember him from Porto. It was the Super Cup in Monaco, Guaridola told reporters.I remember perfectly. I remember playing Wolves last season. They outplayed us in the first half. We were incredibly lucky. A top-class manager. They were alive against Brighton and Liverpool. When we played them with Sean Dyche, they havequality players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi. They have top, top players and a big squad. They play for important things [battling against relegation] like us and this is starting to be a decisive part of the season. We have two games in the Premier League before the international break. We can’t drop points because we are five points behind Arsenal.
Guardiola’s comments also underlined his respect for Vitor Pereira’s work with Forest and linked back to past encounters with teams coached by Pereira, including Porto and Wolves, describing how those sides caused problems for City, which shaped his view that Forest will be tactically organised and dangerous.
| Team | Statistic | Value |

| Arsenal | Chance of winning league | 84% |
| Forest | League position | 17th |
Set-pieces have started to be important. It was different when I started as a manager, Guardiola added. When I was a young boy, we said the people in England celebrate corners and free-kicks like a goal. I remember perfectly, so nothing has changed in that way. Arsenal dictate how they do it and it is an important aspect. Four years ago in the NBA, the three-shot point was not involved as much, but now so many teams do it. It is part of the dynamics. You can sit and complain, but you have to adapt. It’s part of the game. You have to adapt, especiallyto the way it is conducted in the Premier League. Every country has a specific way of doing it and every club has specific ways they play. I understand completely why [Slot’s comments] and in some ways I agree.
Guardiola therefore framed the Premier League title race as a contest shaped by small margins, including set-pieces and defensive concentration, where Arsenal’s strength at corners, City’s strong recent run and Forest’s urgent need for points all combine to create a demanding environment for City’s challenge.
