Form meets desperation when Punjab FC take on Mohammedan SC in the Indian Super League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday evening and the contrast between the two sides could not be sharper.

Punjab FC come into the game riding confidence. Four matches unbeaten, eight points in five games, and a strong fifth-place position the Shers are quietly building momentum. Their latest statement came away from home, where they stunned Kerala Blasters with three goals inside 38 minutes, showing sharp finishing that had been missing earlier.

Even without top scorer Nsungusi Jr. Effiong, the team didn’t slow down. Bede Osuji stepped in, the system adjusted, and Punjab looked just as dangerous.

On the other side, things are falling apart for Mohammedan SC. Five games, zero points, bottom of the table. Their last outing, a crushing 0-7 defeat to East Bengal has left scars. A red card to Joseph Lalmuanawma has only made things tougher ahead of this trip.

History also leans heavily towards Punjab. From I-League days to now, they have rarely slipped against Mohammedan, staying unbeaten across competitions. Even in their last meeting at the Super Cup, Punjab walked away with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Yet, football rarely follows scripts. One team wants to climb higher. The other is fighting just to stay alive. And Punjab coach Panagiotis Dilmperis knows there is still work to do.

“I approach this in two ways. First, in terms of performance, I am very satisfied because in all these games we were the better team on the field… But on the other hand, we didn’t get the results we deserved. So, I am not satisfied with the results.”

That balance good play but not perfect outcomes defines Punjab’s season so far. Their Kerala performance pleased him, but not fully.

“In the first half, we created seven chances and scored three goals… the aspect I’m satisfied with is that we managed to convert our chances.”

Still, he refuses to call it complete.

“No coach especially not me can be totally satisfied… there are still things we could improve in all phases.”

One concern remains defence. Punjab have controlled games but still conceded.

“Opponents are not creating many chances… but due to our mistakes, they managed to score… attack gives you points, but championships come from strong defence.”

With Effiong returning, tactics may shift again.

“Effiong is a different type of centre-forward… with Bede, we focus more on counter-attacks… our playing style adapts depending on the players.”

And no matter the opponent, Punjab won’t change their identity. “This is our style of play… it represents Punjab’s identity. We will continue working on it.”

Friday’s clash now becomes simple to read, but hard to predict. Punjab FC rising, confident, pushing forward.
Mohammedan SC wounded, desperate, and with nothing left to lose.

That’s exactly what makes this contest dangerous.
