Luciano Spalletti insists Juventus remain strong contenders for a Serie A top-four finish, despite another setback in the race for Champions League qualification. Juventus rescued a 3-3 draw against Roma at Stadio Olimpico, with Federico Gatti scoring deep into stoppage time, preventing Roma from opening a seven-point gap in fourth place.
Spalletti stressed Juventus still have the character and quality to close that deficit. The head coach pointed to recent growth within the squad, even with dropped points and their Champions League elimination against Galatasaray. Juventus are currently rated less likely than Roma and Napoli to claim a top-four position, according to Opta’s season projections.
The draw in Rome unfolded in dramatic fashion. Wesley struck first for Roma on 39 minutes, before Francisco Conceicao replied after the break with a powerful effort into the top-left corner from Bremer’s awkward pass. Roma then moved 3-1 ahead thanks to goals from Evan Ndicka and in-form forward Donyell Malen.
Juventus refused to fold in the closing stages. Substitute Jeremie Boga began the comeback with 12 minutes left, converting to pull the score back to 3-2. In stoppage time, Edon Zhegrova delivered a dangerous free-kick, which Roma failed to clear, and Gatti drove the loose ball past Mile Svilar.
Gatti’s goal arrived at 92 minutes and 15 seconds. That makes it the third-latest Juventus goal against Roma in Serie A, behind Osvaldo’s strike in May 2014 at 93:52 and Felipe Melo’s effort in August 2009 at 92:32. The defender’s finish may yet prove vital in Juventus’ bid to overhaul their rivals.
Opta’s supercomputer simulations currently give Juventus a 25.8% chance of ending the season inside Serie A’s top four. Roma, who occupy fourth place, are rated at 57.4%, while Napoli sit higher at 69.7%. Como and Atalanta are also part of the picture, though with lower percentages.
| Team | Chance of Serie A top four (%) |
|---|---|
| Napoli | 69.7 |
| Roma | 57.4 |
| Juventus | 25.8 |
| Como | 24.5 |
| Atalanta | 8.8 |
Despite those numbers, Spalletti underlined confidence in Juventus’ late-season push, speaking to DAZN Italia. “Of course, I believe in this. I live for fourth place. Give it form, and I live for that position. We had a moment where too much weighed on us, and we were not too fortunate either, but this team has grown a great deal in many different aspects. I believe we will have a splendid final portion of the season.”
Juventus top four chase framed by Galatasaray Champions League exit
The league performance followed an exhausting Champions League exit. Juventus lost 5-7 on aggregate to Galatasaray in midweek, despite recovering from 5-2 down in the tie to force extra-time. Spalletti admitted that Juventus started poorly over the two legs, and that the early damage proved decisive.
Reflecting on the European defeat, Spalletti said: “If we are talking about the reaction, then yes I am happy, but if we look at the first season, then I am not very happy,” he added. “We have to make an objective evaluation here. We goout of the Champions League in that manner after playing 120 minutes and getting a situation back on track that had become a mountain to climb. However, we were also too sluggish on the second and third goals. The players believed, they fought back, but we put ourselves in that situation too.”
Spalletti linked that experience to Juventus’ domestic challenge. The coach argued that the squad showed mental strength in both the Galatasaray tie and the Roma draw, but also highlighted the cost of lapses. Those weaknesses, according to Spalletti, explain why Juventus must now chase rather than defend a top-four position.
Juventus top four push and Conceicao’s growing influence
Conceicao’s strike in Rome was among the game’s standout moments. The winger drove Bremer’s bobbling pass into the top-left corner, ending a Serie A scoring drought that stretched back to the reverse fixture against Roma on December 20. It was Conceicao’s third goal in his 20th league appearance of the season.
That total already matches Conceicao’s three goals from 26 Serie A matches last campaign. Speaking to DAZN Italia, Conceicao said: “It was a good goal, but I am much happier with what we did after going 3-1 down, as it was much more difficult then,” before praising the overall display from Juventus at Stadio Olimpico.
Conceicao expanded on Juventus’ efforts against Roma. “The team worked really hard, and I feel if any team deserved to win it, then it was us, as we had some really clear chances.” The winger then turned the focus to personal development and what is needed to help Juventus in the Serie A top-four race.
Looking ahead, Conceicao accepted the need for greater attacking output. “In order to reach the next level, I certainly need to score more goals. I am the first to acknowledge that I am working hard on it in training. I know that playing for Juve, you need to be more effective in front of goal. I am the first to be upset when I don’t score.”
Juventus leave Rome with a point that keeps the Serie A top-four contest open, supported by late contributions from Boga, Gatti and Conceicao. Opta’s projections still favour Roma and Napoli, yet Spalletti and the players draw confidence from their response in both league and Europe, believing their season’s final phase can still deliver Champions League qualification.
