East Bengal Women have created history by qualifying for the quarterfinals of the AFC Women’s Champions League 2026-27, becoming the first Indian club to reach the knockout stage of the continental competition.
The Moshal Girls secured their place in the last eight despite suffering a 2-0 defeat against North Korean outfit April 25 SC in their final Group B fixture at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday.
Anthony Andrews’ side had entered the decisive encounter knowing that a positive result would strengthen their qualification prospects after an impressive 2-1 victory over Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City WFC in their opening match. However, a subsequent 4-1 defeat against South Korea’s Hwacheon KSPO WFC had left their knockout hopes hanging in the balance.
Despite the setback against April 25, East Bengal managed to secure qualification through the overall group-stage standings and the competition’s qualification criteria, which allow the two best-ranked third-placed teams across the three groups to advance. East Bengal had also qualified for the group stage for the second consecutive season after topping their preliminary-stage group in Malaysia in August.
Their qualification for the quarterfinals now gives Indian football its first representation in the knockout stage of Asia’s premier women’s club competition.
Who Will East Bengal Women Face In The Quarterfinals?
East Bengal will enter the quarterfinal draw as one of the unseeded teams, meaning they could face one of three seeded opponents: Beijing Jingtan FC (China), Naegohyang Women’s FC (North Korea) or Melbourne City FC (Australia).
The quarterfinal draw is scheduled to take place in later, with the knockout fixtures to be played in a single-leg format.
A potential meeting with Naegohyang could present a particularly interesting logistical challenge. Given the complications surrounding travel and hosting international fixtures in North Korea, there is a strong possibility that such a fixture could be shifted to a neutral venue, subject to AFC arrangements.
However, if East Bengal are drawn against Beijing Jingtan or Melbourne City, they could be required to travel to China or Australia respectively for their quarterfinal assignment.
Under the competition regulations, the seeded teams receive home advantage in the quarterfinals. Therefore, East Bengal face the prospect of an away fixture regardless of their opponent. Having already made history by reaching the last eight, the Kolkata outfit will now look to extend their remarkable continental campaign.
