The entire footballing fraternity is in shock after the tragic death of CD Tenerife forward Jesus
de Miguel, who passed away aged 30 on Tuesday, November 3, following a serious on-field collision during a Segunda División match against FC Andorra.
The incident occurred late in Monday’s encounter when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel for a long ball. The goalkeeper’s knee struck the striker in the chest, leaving him unconscious. Owono was immediately shown a red card.
Medical staff rushed to De Miguel’s aid before he was taken to hospital after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest. Despite initially being described as stable, his neurological condition deteriorated overnight.
Tenerife confirmed his death in an emotional statement. The tragedy has prompted heartfelt tributes from clubs across Spain, including Real Madrid and Barcelona. Beyond Spain, clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool have also mourned the loss and have been together in solidarity amid the devastating incident.
The tragic passing of De Miguel has created widespread online anger directed at Owono. But a footballer named Michel Owono shared his social media messages from fans, who mistakenly identified him as Jesus and hurled abusive messages.
Michel Owono, a lower-league player at CF Can Vidalet who shares the same Equatoguinean surname but has no connection to the event, was mistaken for the Andorra goalkeeper and received a wave of racist insults, death threats and calls for imprisonment via Instagram DMs and comments.
In his post he shared a video of the abusive messages alongside a formal statement offering condolences to de Miguel’s family, explicitly stating “NO SOY JESÚS OWONO” (I am not Jesus Owono), condemning the hatred and racism, and calling for respect and humanity in football and society.
“I want to make it absolutely clear that I AM NOT JESÚS OWONO and have no connection whatsoever with what happened. People are confusing us because of our surnames, and as a result, I have received numerous messages filled with hatred, racism, insults and threats, which deeply hurt me. I condemn all of it in the strongest possible terms,” he wrote on social media.
