The weather could be downright frightful in parts of the U.S. this Halloween as kids and families head out for trick-or-treating.

The hunt for candy in the South and Midwest could be met with flooding rain and thunderstorms from Thursday through Saturday, according to AccuWeather.

“Families across Texas getting ready for Halloween should pay close attention to the weather, especially if they’re traveling or heading to outdoor events Thursday or Friday,” AccuWeather expert meteorologist Tyler Roys told The Independent.

Areas along the West Coast, including Los Angeles and San Diego, may also see showers.

Here is a look at what you can expect in your region for the holiday.

The South

You might want to carry an umbrella if you plan to wear water-based face paint in the warm and humid South this October 31. Moisture from Tropical Storm Vance is anticipated to bring between two to four inches of rain in some Texas cities, leading to the potential for dangerous flash floods.

That’s of particular concern in areas already stricken with drought, Roys said.

“After prolonged drought, the ground can become so hard that heavy rain runs off instead of soaking in. That means a storm bringing much-needed moisture could quickly turn into a dangerous situation for drivers, homeowners and communities across West Texas,” he warned.

It’s also just expected to be warm and humid for cities stretching across the Gulf Coast into Florida.

“By Halloween, it could feel more like summer than the final weekend of October,” wrote Ric Kearbey a Sarasota, Florida, meteorologist.

Spotty showers are also forecast across parts of the Florida Peninsula.

The West

The Southern California coast could see some storms by Halloween night, KTLA meteorologist Kirk Hawkins said Wednesday. But the real note will be the temperature shift at the same time.

“The big story will be the gradual cooldown,” he said. “60s and 70s are going to be a little bit more of the norm.”

Chillier weather is forecast for the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West, too, with temperatures in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming feeling like they’re in the 30s and 40s.

While there’s only a 20 percent chance of showers around the Los Angeles area, other western areas won’t be as lucky.

“The storms and tropical moisture are more likely to come together over the interior West, increasing the risk of renewed flash flooding, debris flows and significant river rises in parts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado from late this weekend into early next week,” senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski explained.

The Midwest

The Midwest could see rain fall on Des Moines, Chicago and Minneapolis on Friday and Saturday, though most of the impacts will be on Friday.

“If your Halloween festivities start Friday evening for Beggars’ Night, there will generally be more rain to deal with compared to Saturday,” Des Moines, Iowa, meteorologist Sloane Dulany wrote.

But temperatures in the region are expected to be fairly temperate, with highs in the 60s for most places.

“That’s really good for this time of year, because you know we could really get anything,” Chicago’s NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Iisha Scott said.

The East

The vibes are incredibly good for much of the eastern U.S. this Halloween. High temperatures are forecast in the 60s up and down the East Coast, Fox 5 DC says, with some cooler highs in New England.

There could be some cloudy but dry skies in the Mid-Atlantic area. After many weekends of summer rain, the comfortable conditions are most welcome.

“Not much more you can ask for here for Halloween,” Matt Benz, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, told New York-based silive.com this week.
