New Delhi, Oct 27: Football’s most prestigious individual accolade has returned to English hands for the first time in a quarter of a century. In a dazzling ceremony held in London on Monday, Harry Kane claimed the 2026 Ballon d’Or, edging out global superstars Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to cap off a monumental chapter in his storied career.

For the 33-year-old Bayern Munich and England marksman, the milestone moment was as much a reflection of his past as it was a celebration of his present.

Honoring Foundations at North London

Standing on stage with the coveted golden trophy, Kane’s thoughts immediately drifted back to where it all began. Having arrived at Tottenham Hotspur as an 11-year-old boy with big aspirations, the striker acknowledged that his remarkable journey to the pinnacle of world football was forged in the club’s academy.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without Tottenham, for sure,” Kane reflected during an emotional acceptance speech. Crediting the steady guidance of the coaching staff for allowing him to live out his childhood ambitions, he noted that every triumph and tribulation in north London ultimately paved the way for his coronation in the capital.

The captain made a point to honor the mentors who shaped his early trajectory, specifically naming Chris Ramsey, Tim Sherwood, and his close confidant Ryan Mason, whom he fondly hailed as one of his dearest friends.

Leading Country & Club

The historic victory also follows a stellar international campaign that saw Kane lead the Three Lions to a commendable third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup. Praising the collective spirit within the national camp, Kane emphasized that his individual honor belongs to the entire squad.

“We built a great bond together… and it is truly an honour to play and captain you. This one is for all of us, for sure,” he shared, while also expressing deep gratitude to England manager Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff for relentlessly driving standards and leadership.

Tuchel was quick to heap praise on his talismanic striker, joining a chorus of global acclaim. “I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I’m delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world,” Tuchel remarked, noting how fortunate the team is to have such an exemplary leader. In a glowing tribute to the historic achievement, Wembley Stadium later illuminated its famous arches in gold.

A Shared Victory

While the glittering lights of London shone on his footballing brilliance, Kane made sure to turn the spotlight toward the pillars of his personal life.

Addressing his wife, Kate, whom he called his rock and best friend, the striker recognized the immense sacrifices she made behind the scenes to fuel his career. “You sacrifice yourself to make me achieve my dreams. This wouldn’t be possible without you and it is something we can celebrate, not me. We’re a team,” he said.

With a chuckle for his four children-Ivy, Vivienne, Louis, and Henry-who were surely breaking bedtime rules to watch their father make history, Kane left no doubt about his ultimate inspiration. “You are the reason I do it,” he smiled. “This is a special one and I can’t wait to bring this home.”
