Paris Saint-Germain have suffered a major injury setback, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ruled out for an extended period after sustaining a serious knee injury during their UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona.

The Georgian winger has been diagnosed with a ruptured ACL in his right knee and is set to undergo surgery, leaving PSG without one of their key attacking players for the foreseeable future.

What happened to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia?

Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury during PSG’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Georgian winger was forced off shortly before the hour mark after appearing to twist his right knee.

The 25-year-old required assistance from medical staff to leave the pitch and was unable to put weight on his injured leg. The incident raised immediate concerns about the severity of the injury, with PSG awaiting further medical examinations after the match.

The club confirmed the diagnosis in an official medical update on Wednesday, announcing that Kvaratskhelia had suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. He is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days.

When will Kvaratskhelia return?

PSG have not provided a specific timeline for Kvaratskhelia’s return to action. However, an ACL rupture generally requires several months of rehabilitation, including recovery from surgery, restoration of strength and stability, and a gradual return to football training.

His absence is therefore expected to be prolonged, and he could miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season. His actual recovery period will depend on the surgery, rehabilitation progress and subsequent medical assessments.

Kvaratskhelia’s injury is a significant setback for PSG, who are competing across domestic and European competitions. The winger has been an important attacking option for Luis Enrique, contributing through his dribbling, chance creation and goals.

PSG suffer further injury setbacks

Kvaratskhelia was not the only PSG player to suffer an injury against Barcelona. Ousmane Dembele was substituted in the first half with a left thigh injury, while captain Marquinhos also left the field with a right thigh problem.

PSG confirmed that both players would remain under medical care for the coming weeks, although their situations are separate from Kvaratskhelia’s more serious knee injury.

While PSG secured an important Champions League victory, the loss of three key players has created fresh selection concerns for Luis Enrique.
