New Delhi, Oct 19: Punjab FC will look to settle scores with Mumbai City FC when the two sides meet in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

Punjab FC, under new head coach Pavlos Dermitzakis, made a winning start to their campaign, defeating Odisha FC 2-1 last week, courtesy of Raphael Messi Bouli’s goals in the first and final minutes. Mumbai City FC, meanwhile, suffered a 1-2 defeat against newcomers Churchill Brothers in their opening fixture under head coach Manolo Márquez.

Mumbai City hold the historical advantage in this fixture, having won three of their five league meetings with Punjab. Punjab have registered one victory, while the other encounter ended in a draw. Mumbai City also won their previous meeting 2-0 in May, with Valpuia and Vikram Partap Singh finding the net.

Ahead of Monday’s clash, Dermitzakis stressed that preparation and execution would be crucial, rather than any perceived advantage at this early stage of the season.

“There is no real advantage for any team tomorrow as it is early in the season. The team that is better prepared will have a better game and the team with better moments on the pitch will win the match,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter how the opponent prepares; what matters is how we approach the game and execute our plan,” he added.

The Punjab coach also praised his players’ character after their opening victory, highlighting their determination to fight until the final whistle.

“A win like that builds true character. We stuck to our plan, didn’t panic, and fought until the very last minute to get the result,” Dermitzakis said, underlining the importance of contributions from substitutes.

Mumbai City, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back from their disappointing start. Márquez acknowledged the defeat but remained focused on improving his side through training.

“We lost the first game, and we are not happy, but this happens in football, and you need to continue,” he said.

With both teams seeking valuable early-season points, Monday’s encounter promises a competitive contest as Punjab look to extend their winning start and Mumbai City attempt to get their campaign back on track.
