The Trump administration’s investigation into Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is focusing on her citizenship application and date of birth, according to a report.
Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, raided the Minnesota congresswoman’s home in Washington, D.C. early Monday.
The Justice Department and Homeland Security investigation is probing whether Omar or her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, “intentionally misstated her birth date on immigration paperwork,” according to The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the matter, including a Trump administration official.
Omar, the first Somali American elected to Congress, has long been a target of President Donald Trump and has accused the commander in chief of peddling “baseless lies and smear campaigns.” The timing of the latest probe against her has raised eyebrows with just weeks to go until the midterm elections.
Omar has been a U.S. citizen for 26 years, arriving in the U.S. as a refugee aged 12 in 1995. Agents are questioning whether her date of birth was misstated on purpose to give Omar an eligible route to derivative citizenship as a minor through her father in 2000, according to the Post. Omar’s father died five years ago.
The theory about Omar’s date of birth was raised previously in 2019 by A.J. Kern, a former Republican congressional candidate in Minnesota. Homeland Security Investigations looked into similar allegations against Omar years ago but reportedly did not move forward with the probe.
The Independent has contacted the Justice Department for comment.
The representative has repeatedly denied the allegations, vowing that she “will not be silenced” in a defiant statement after Monday’s raid.
Jacklyn Rogers, a spokesperson for Omar, added that the congresswoman “has done nothing wrong” and “no president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies.”
The president has routinely used derogatory and inflammatory language to describe Omar and the Somali population in Minnesota. After she was elected seven years ago, Trump said she should “go back” to her home country.
Trump claimed he was not involved in the latest investigation in a post on Truth Social following the raid of Omar’s Washington, D.C. home.
“I understand they’re looking at her carefully. I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me,” the president said Monday. “I think she’s a terrible person, just a complainer. She comes from a country that is not a non-country, and then she comes over here, and she complains about our constitution. I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ.”
Since the statement, Trump has been posting links to stories celebrating the investigation into Omar on Truth Social, and questioned her finances without evidence.
“How many people did she illegally bring into our Country from Somalia?” Trump said Tuesday. “America wants answers, and we want them, NOW!”
His post followed an announcement by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro that her office has launched a separate investigation into Omar’s financial disclosure forms.
House Democratic leadership swiftly condemned the investigation, highlighting that it was carried out with less than 30 days until the midterm elections.
“The Trump administration’s raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement.
“For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations. Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.”
