Croatia legend Davor Suker believes Luka Modric is not finished with Real Madrid yet and expects a future reunion after a single season at AC Milan. Some reports even link the Croatia captain with retirement after the World Cup, yet Suker predicts a Madrid return in some role, on the pitch or behind the scenes.

Asked directly about Modric’s next move, Suker described ongoing uncertainty around the midfielder’s club future. Suker told Radio Marca, as quoted by Football Italia: “Now you’ll ask me whether he’ll continue at Milan or return to Madrid. I think something will happen with Real Madrid,” Suker told Radio Marca, as quoted by Football Italia. “Surely, he will return, but I don’t know how. Let’s wait for the end of the World Cup and see what happens. I can’t say more, I can’t say more. Leave something a bit in the air; I can’t say it all.”

Modric joined Milan last July on a one-year deal, which included an option for a further season. The campaign turned difficult for Milan as a late collapse damaged their domestic form. The team missed Champions League qualification, which triggered a major internal shake-up and led to the sacking of Massimiliano Allegri.

That uncertain situation at Milan adds weight to ongoing speculation around Modric’s next step. The missed Champions League place reduces the club’s appeal for older stars seeking elite competition. With Milan rebuilding and Modric out of contract unless the option activates, the possibility of a move back to Real Madrid remains a live talking point across Europe.

Modric left Real Madrid at the end of the 2024-25 season, closing a long Santiago Bernabeu chapter. The Croatia midfielder completed 13 years with the Spanish side. During that time, Modric established a central role in a dominant era for Real Madrid in Spain and Europe.

Across those 13 seasons, Modric collected 28 major trophies with Real Madrid. His honours include four LaLiga titles, six Champions Leagues, five UEFA Super Cups and five FIFA Club World Cups. The full breakdown of Modric’s silverware at Real Madrid is shown below.

Modric played 597 matches for Real Madrid in all competitions, showing remarkable consistency and fitness levels. During those appearances, Modric supplied 88 assists. Only Toni Kroos, with 93, and Karim Benzema, with 118, delivered more assists for Real Madrid over the same period, underlining Modric’s creative influence.

With Modric’s influence still clear for Croatia at the World Cup, debate continues around the next chapter. Suker’s view keeps attention focused on Real Madrid, while the Milan situation and speculation about possible retirement present other scenarios. Modric’s decision after the World Cup is likely to shape the closing period of an already decorated career.
