As the Indian football team embarks to the field for the upcoming match against Uruguay, the scene for the ticket sales look extremely bleak.

The biggest concern surrounding India’s current run of high-profile international friendlies may not be what is happening on the pitch, but what is happening in the stands.

India’s fixtures against three 2026 World Cup participants – Panama, Brazil and Uruguay – were expected to create a significant buzz. Instead, the ticketing response has raised questions over how the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is packaging and selling marquee national-team matches.

The warning sign came first in Bengaluru. Just 9,039 spectators attended India’s 1-1 draw against Panama at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, despite Panama being a World Cup participant. Reports before the game had already highlighted concerns over ticket prices and slow sales.

AIFF released Thousands of Tickets for Free for Brazil clash

The Brazil game in Kolkata was obviously a bigger attraction, but even that fixture did not fill the 68,000-capacity Salt Lake Stadium. 51,402 fans attended as per the official communication, but the crowd came in numbers after AIFF’s desperate call and it felt the actual number was less than that.

That is significant because Brazil was arguably the biggest football attraction India could host. AIFF had also announced more than 14,000 discounted seats for supporters of Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting before the Kolkata friendlies. Clubs had very low interest from the fans, and with a couple of days to go, lion’s share of tickets were unsold.

With panic in their veins, a day before the blockbuster clash, AIFF had to release more than 25 thousand tickets for free, which largely saved their faces. The tickets went through West Bengal government’s political channels, the tickets were finally availed for free.

AIFF forced to concede Tickets for Uruguay Match

The Uruguay fixture has brought the ticketing issue into sharper focus. Selected seats originally priced at ₹1,999 have been reduced to ₹199, a 90% cut, as the October 6 fixture approaches.

But before that, the West Bengal government also stepped in. Fans who purchased tickets for last year’s Messi G.O.A.T. Tour event in Kolkata and were unable to properly watch the Argentine star have been offered complimentary passes for the Uruguay match. The passes are being distributed on October 5 against the previous ticket and government-issued photo ID.

Although the West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari quite gleefully made the announcement, the far darker backstory of the AIFF lies quite vividly on the horizon.

AIFF has struggled to sell tickets for the Uruguay matches, even in a more glaring fashion than the Brazil encounter. The 90% discount, complimentary passes, all indicate the distress signal of AIFF, which, for now at least, has been saved by the multifaceted efforts.

What did AIFF miss Out?

But how many times will a government save the AIFF blushes? None of this necessarily means fans have lost interest in Indian football. In Bengaluru, the pricing was specifically criticised by supporters, while the same venue had attracted strong crowds during India’s 2023 SAFF Championship campaign.

In Kolkata, the scene is the same. Fans are not used to pay in thousands to watch a football match. And the pricing from AIFF has quite significantly curbed the enthusiasm. The bigger lesson for AIFF is therefore about ticketing strategy and fan engagement. High prices, late or insufficient promotion, and failing to build a compelling matchday narrative can make even prestigious fixtures difficult to sell.

Will AIFF learn From It?

AIFF had to start earlier – announce ticketing well in advance, create sustained digital and local promotion, work with clubs and fan groups, introduce affordable entry-level categories and make national-team matches feel like events. And to be very honest, they failed to do so.

The reported debts of the apex body of Indian football will rise after these marquee fixtures. AIFF were hoping a large chunk of the revenue will come from ticket sales, but they are way off that so far. The AIFF Special General Meeting (SGM) saw questions raised over ticket sales, sums to pay to Brazil and Uruguay, who charge around a combined ₹67 crore for away matches.

MyKhel caught up with AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey after the Brazil match and the AIFF chief didn’t comment on the Brazil turnout, but said he expects a bigger turnout for the Uruguay match.

“I am sure. People who follow and love football would love to watch players like these. They are some of world’s best players. It’s an opportunity for us to watch them play on our soil. India is known for its popularity in football. I am sure people will follow Indian football and our players will benefit,” Chaubey said this website.

He also confirmed in the SGM that none of the fees to the Brazil and Uruguay team will be paid from the AIFF account, and assured there will be no debits from the finance. But Indian football

The Brazil and Uruguay experience should be a wake-up call. State governments and complimentary allocations cannot be the permanent solution. AIFF has to make the Indian national team and its matches as an affordable commodity, or else it may continue to have financial ramifications.
