The stage is set for another chapter in Kerala football’s growing rivalry as Calicut FC host Malappuram FC in the first Malabar Derby of the White Gold Super League Kerala Season 3. The highly anticipated clash will take place at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode at 7:30 PM on Friday.

Calicut FC head into the contest with confidence after making an impressive start to their campaign. The Kozhikode-based side defeated Thiruvananthapuram Kombans 2-0 at the same venue last week, with K. Prasanth and Maximiliano Urruti finding the net. The result has placed Calicut at the top of the standings and given them early momentum.

Head coach Ever Adriano Demalde believes the team’s blend of youth and experience has been central to its strong beginning. He has also highlighted the development of the younger players, who have managed to hold their own alongside the more experienced members of the squad.

Prasanth, one of the scorers in Calicut’s opening victory, echoed that confidence, saying the squad is pleased with its start and eager to build on it against their regional rivals.

Malappuram FC, meanwhile, arrive with a point to prove. Their opening match ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat against Forca Kochi FC, with Rahul Raju scoring late after a goalkeeping error. The timing of the setback made it particularly frustrating for Malappuram, who had made a late goalkeeping change shortly before the decisive moment.

Coach Karim Bencherifa, however, remains confident that his side can respond immediately. With Malappuram still searching for their first points, Friday’s derby offers them an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding their campaign.

The historical numbers add another layer to the contest. Calicut FC are unbeaten against Malappuram across their four meetings in the first two seasons, recording three victories and one draw. That record gives Calicut a statistical advantage, but it also provides Malappuram with additional motivation.

For Calicut, the objective is straightforward: maintain their perfect start and extend their dominance in the derby. For Malappuram, it is about more than three points. A victory would not only open their account for the season but also mark their first-ever win over their neighbours in the competition.

With local pride, momentum and league points all at stake, the latest Malabar Derby promises another intense contest between two sides with very different objectives.
