Sean Dyche has played down growing links to the Tottenham head coach position, even as Igor Tudor faces scrutiny during a poor run for Spurs. Tottenham sit just one point clear of the relegation places, with pressure building after a long winless streak and difficult personal circumstances for Tudor.
Tottenham have not won any of their last 13 Premier League matches, with five draws and eight defeats in that stretch. That sequence matches the club’s second-longest run without a league victory. Under Tudor, Spurs have taken just one point from five league games, losing four.
Tudor’s situation has become more complex after the death of Tudor’s father, Mario, last weekend. Reports in England have suggested Tottenham could change head coach before the end of the season. Dyche has been named among the leading contenders, with speculation that Dyche might take over on a short-term basis.
Dyche responded to those Tottenham rumours with humour when speaking to talkSPORT. Dyche laughed and said: “Ah, it’s brilliant, honestly.” Dyche then shared an anecdote about being approached in a pub, describing how speculation can grow even when Dyche is clearly elsewhere and away from negotiations.
Dyche explained the pub incident in detail, using it to highlight the nature of Spurs gossip. “I was in the pub and this guy goes, ‘Ah, you’re meant to be in talks with Spurs tonight?’ And I say, ‘I’m sat next to you having a pint of Guinness, so it’s unlikely, unless you work for Spurs!’
Dyche then gave a wider view on how Tottenham speculation develops around any head coach. “To give you an inside view, when you’re the manager, you know you’re going to get asked these at some point and whatever part of your career if you’re doing all right. You get asked and you try to be respectful because let’s use Tottenham as an example. A brilliant club, massive club and all the rest of it and one of my first ever memories is Ricky Villa’s goal and so you say yeah, flattered. And [social media] say, ‘He hasn’t said no,’ and then you go, ‘no,’ and they say, ‘he wants it really’, so you say, ‘yes,’ and they say, ‘I knew he wanted it,’ so what can you say?”
Spurs context, Tottenham head coach uncertainty and Dyche’s recent record
Before the Tottenham links, Dyche was dismissed by Nottingham Forest in early February, after a goalless draw with bottom side Wolves. That result left Forest in serious relegation trouble. Dyche’s departure opened the door for Vitor Pereira, whose early results have lifted Forest away from the drop zone.
Since Pereira’s arrival, Forest have drawn with Manchester City and Fulham, and also beaten Spurs 3-0 in their last outing. Those seven points have moved Forest up to 16th place, easing immediate pressure. Tottenham, in contrast, remain just above the bottom three, with form and confidence both fragile.
Tottenham head coach outlook for Spurs and upcoming fixtures
Spurs now have a break before facing Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on 12 April. That match offers Tudor and Tottenham a chance to reset after the long winless spell. Whether Spurs remain with Tudor or eventually turn to Dyche or another head coach will depend on results and internal decisions in the weeks ahead.
