A powerful nor’easter battered the Northeast again on Sunday, flooding coastal communities and leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power as forecasters warned that another round of high tides could inundate vulnerable shorelines.
The slow-moving storm, which killed a New York City Housing Authority worker when a tree fell Saturday, was expected to linger through Sunday with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf from New Jersey to New England.
The nor’easter triggered memories of Superstorm Sandy, which left behind over $60 billion in damage across the eastern U.S. in 2012. While this storm’s impact has been nowhere near that, it could be the first of several along the East Coast this fall because of an El Niño climate pattern that’s disrupting this year’s weather.
Hurricane Nolo skirts Hawaii, but powerful winds and flooding remain threats
Officials said Hurricane Nolo still posed a risk for flash floods, dangerous winds and extreme surf in areas recovering from previous storms.
Nolo was churning very slowly south of the Big Island with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. Its center was about 165 miles south-southwest of Hawaii’s southernmost point, and it was forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane late Sunday and early Monday while traveling westward to the south of the islands.
Five men arrested on terrorism charge near U.S. air base in Britain
British police arrested several men on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses on Sunday and evacuated homes near an air base that the U.S. Air Force had been using to facilitate strikes on Iran.
A major incident was declared, with a massive emergency presence seen around RAF Fairford, which is about 90 minutes outside London, close to the village of Whelford in west England.
The Gloucestershire police force said it responded in the early hours of Sunday to reports of three suspicious vehicles moving toward the base and arrested five men.
Asked about the incident, President Donald Trump told reporters the arrest was an “amazing job.”
Iran ‘fully prepared’ for war to resume, but diplomacy not over yet, foreign minister says
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country is prepared to resume fighting with the United States but has not yet abandoned diplomacy after Trump publicly rejected a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are fully prepared for the war to be resumed. We stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war,” Araghchi told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday, when asked about a Wall Street Journal report that Trump could seek to resume bombing after the U.S. midterm elections. “At the same time, we stand ready for diplomacy. It is up to President Trump to choose.”
Araghchi told moderator Kristen Welker that despite Trump’s public comments, the rejection had still not been officially communicated to Iran via mediators.
He reaffirmed that Iran was ready to reopen the strait as part of an agreement to end the conflict, adding that in return, “we want our monies, our assets, which are illegally frozen, to be released. We want to be able to sell our oil.”
Bill Gates says getting global AI regulations will be harder than Cold War-era nuclear negotiations
Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates called on the U.S. to be a leader in regulating the growth of artificial intelligence but warned that getting countries to agree on a global framework could be “more difficult” than Cold War-era negotiations to limit nuclear weapons.
“This is more difficult than that was,” Gates told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Wednesday during a wide-ranging discussion on AI that aired Sunday.
His remarks came as he spoke about Trump’s stance against regulating AI. Gates argued that regulating AI companies by imposing monitoring systems would not hamper the U.S. in any race with China to develop superior technology.
In a Sunday interview on “Meet the Press,” Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said the U.S. and China need to form a working group with technology experts from both countries to come to an agreement on AI.

“A lot of them can’t spell it,” quipped GOP Sen. Thom Tillis. Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego was equally skeptical: “They still don’t know how to get on the internet.”
One thing that everyone seems to agree on: Congress is not close to regulating AI. It hasn’t passed any sweeping, comprehensive legislation regulating the internet, invented more than 40 years ago, instead taking a more piecemeal approach and relying on existing laws.
New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson kicks off the new season of ‘SNL’
NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson, of the 2026 championship-winning New York Knicks, kicked off the 52nd season of “Saturday Night Live” with musical guest Katseye.
Brunson delivered a monologue in which he promised to approach his “SNL” performance with the same strategy he used during Knicks’ NBA Finals games.
“The first three quarters of the show are going to be god-awful,” he said. “The last sketch is going to be amazing.”
Saturday’s show also marked the first “SNL” season for two new featured players, Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter, after it bid farewell to cast member Chloe Fineman and writer Martin Herlihy.
