Sept. 21 (UPI) — World Cup champion Spain extended coach Luis de la Fuente’s contract through 2032, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, or RFEF, announced Monday.
The RFEF board of directors unanimously approved the extension Monday at the federation’s headquarters in Madrid.
De la Fuente’s previous pact was set to expire in 2028. He is now tied to the top-ranked Spaniards through the 2032 European Championships, as well as the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2028.
“We are looking for a project based on stability and confidence,” RFEF board of directors chairman Rafael Louzan said in a news release. “This proposal is founded on our confidence in Luis de la Fuente and in the sporting project he leads, for a multiyear competitive cycle featuring major tournaments.
“We are talking about the most decorated coach in the history of the national team, and after fourteen years in our organization, this is something Luis de la Fuente deserves: a long-term future with the RFEF.”
De la Fuente previously led Spain to titles at Euro 2024 and the 2023 Nations League and runner-up finishes in the 2020 Sumer Olympics and 2025 Nations League. He coached Spain’s under-19 and under-21 squads before taking over the senior team.
De la Fuente and the Spaniards will battle No. 4 England in Nations League play at 2:45 p.m. EDT Saturday in London. They will play additional Nations League matchups with No. 13 Croatia and No. 48 Czechia.
Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina will co-host the 2030 World Cup.
