President Donald Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday, the mayor’s office confirmed to NBC News.

In a statement, Mamdani’s office said the two would meet at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence, to discuss “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.” The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The president will be in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly meeting, where he is set to deliver remarks on Tuesday and meet with global leaders.

This will be at least the third public meeting between Trump and Mamdani, who have previously met at the White House. The two first met in November 2025.

The Democratic mayor, who was first elected almost a year ago, and the president have had a mostly friendly relationship, though they have at times publicly criticized each other.

Prior to their first meeting, Trump described Mamdani as a “communist lunatic,” but after meeting with the then-mayor-elect in the Oval Office, the president told reporters that he’d be “cheering” for Mamdani and described him as a “very rational person.”

In an April interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Mamdani called his relationship with Trump “honest, direct and productive.”

He added that the pair get along as two natives of the nation’s largest city, saying, “New York City holds a very special place for him as well as for me. We’re both from the same city.”

Following their second White House meeting in February, Mamdani said he raised to the president the arrest of a Columbia University student by Department of Homeland Security agents. The student was released shortly after their meeting.

Despite Trump maintaining a chummier relationship with Mamdani than with other Democrats, the president has jabbed at him publicly.

Earlier this year, Mamdani rolled out his plan to impose a pied-à-terre tax on New York City homeowners who maintain a nonprimary residence in the city.

Trump derided the tax as “SO WRONG” in a post on Truth Social, writing, “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG.”

During his campaign last year, Mamdani called the president a “despot” and a “fascist,” remarks he defended even after his first meeting with Trump.

“That’s something I’ve said in the past and I say today,” he told “Meet the Press” after the Oval Office meeting.

“I think what I appreciated about the conversation that I had with the president was that we were not shy about the places of disagreement, about the politics that has brought us to this moment,” the mayor added. “And we also wanted to focus on what it could look like to deliver on a shared analysis of an affordability crisis for New Yorkers.”

Mamdani has also criticized Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran. In April, he blamed the military conflict for worsening a cost-of-living crisis in the city he leads.

“I wish that the words of Tupac from the ’90s weren’t still prescient, but they continue to be true for too many, which is that ‘We always have money for war and not to feed the poor,’” he told “Meet the Press.”
