Dramatic video released Wednesday shows the moment two Minneapolis police officers were shot after racing to the ninth floor of an apartment building where a gunman had killed two people and wounded three others.

Footage released by the City of Minneapolis shows officers moving through the building earlier this month as they attempted to secure it with residents still trapped inside.

Officers are seen approaching a victim lying in a hallway when gunman Carlton Johnson suddenly emerges from around a corner and draws a handgun.

Officer Joseph Michnowski is struck and runs back down the hallway as more shots ring out.

“Shooter’s on the ninth floor. I took some rounds,” Michnowski says over his radio before raising a visibly shaking left hand.

Other officers, separated from Michnowski, shout from a stairwell: “Joe, are you OK?”

Moments later, Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed is seen standing on the stairwell landing with his gun pointed toward the hallway when another burst of gunfire erupts.

Smoke fills the doorway and officers scramble back down the stairs.

“Oh, I got hit,” Ahmed yells.

Johnson was later shot and killed by police.

The violence began outside the apartment building during a planned child custody handoff, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Johnson allegedly shot and wounded a woman believed to be the mother of his child. The child was not injured.

Authorities said Johnson then shot and wounded two building employees before taking an elevator to the ninth floor, where he fatally shot two residents.

Police subsequently encountered Johnson and killed him. Investigators have said it remains unclear whether the two residents were deliberately targeted or happened to encounter Johnson in the hallway.

The building’s owners had been attempting to evict Johnson, who had previously threatened neighbors and warned that he planned to shoot people, according to residents, court documents and law enforcement officials.

At least one person had sought a restraining order against him.

Police also investigated Johnson in June over allegations that he displayed a weapon, but the county attorney’s office declined to file charges.
