Sept. 9 (UPI) — Nirvana will be honored at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

The rock band will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs later this month, MTV announced in a press release Wednesday.

Nirvana, a group fronted by late singer and musician Kurt Cobain, first performed at the VMAs 34 years ago, on Sept. 9, 1992.

This year’s ceremony will take place Sept. 27 and air at 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS and MTV. The show will also stream on Paramount+.

Nirvana, consisting of Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, found mainstream success with its 1991 album, Nevermind, and its 1993 follow-up, In Utero.

The band famously recorded a live album for MTV Unplugged that was released in late 1994 following Cobain’s suicide.

Nirvana’s best-known singles include “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”
