Aug. 25 (UPI) — A Los Angeles man’s home security camera captured an unusual confrontation between a bear and a mother coyote.

Richard Hurwitz said he got a notification from his security camera about 2:30 a.m. Sunday and was shocked when he looked at the footage from outside his Tarzana home.

The camera recorded as a bear that approached the stone path to his driveway was stopped in its tracks by a coyote.

“I couldn’t believe what I saw,” Hurwitz told KTLA-TV.

The coyote repeatedly approached the bear, which slowly backed off while a second, smaller coyote watched from the road.

“The bigger coyote was really trying to keep the bear away from the little one,” Hurwitz told KABC-TV. “Several times, it went toward the bear just to kind of protect the little one. I just thought, ‘Oh my God. I can’t wait to show this to somebody.'”

The bear eventually fled to a nearby yard. The confrontation did not turn violent, Hurwitz said.
