Aug. 19 (UPI) — Ghost Song, a new film from Fatih Akin, will open the 2026 San Sebastian Film Festival.
Organizers announced in a press release Wednesday that the romantic drama will have its world premiere Sept. 18 at the Kursaal following the opening ceremony. The 74th annual festival will run through Sept. 26.
Ghost Song is the first title from Akin, a German-Turkish director known for Head-On, The Edge of Heaven, Soul Kitchen and In the Fade, to compete for the Golden Shell at San Sebastian.
Mariam Dawoud and Eren M. Guvercin star as Farasha and Faris, two young people who fall in love at first sight after meeting at a graduation party.
“When Farasha suddenly dies that same night, an extraordinary love story unfolds between two worlds, as she finds a way to meet Faris in his dreams,” an official synopsis reads.
17 films in total, including Ghost Song, make up this year’s Official Selection. Other titles include My Sad Dead by Pablo Larrain, In My Father’s Room from Maha Harada, Tender Loving Care by Mike Leigh and The Debut from Jesse Eisenberg.
